Chavez Jr had Martinez on the ground like a hoe. Golovkin is better than Jr in every department except maybe punch resistance (I haven't seen Triple Gs chin really tested, he slips a lot of punches). I think Golovkin takes it, Martinez wants none of that.
I think Martinez best bet as he ages toward retirement is fighting smaller fighters for bigger paydays. If he can look good vs Cotto then Floyd would make a great retirement fight. Since he is not a natural MW and has had injury issues as well, no respect lost from me if he cruises toward retirement by taking less punishing fights with larger purses. From a fan perspective, GGG needs Martinez to legitimize the hype... but from HBO perspective , they can just keep showing GGG 3-4 times a year and build him up that way. I doubt HBO will be interested in putting up the kind of money to fight GGG that Martinez could make fighting more popular, lighter opponents. Golovkin needs Martinez, but the reverse does not hold true. GGG is the target for those who want to MW crown post-Martinez, no need for a guy closing on retirement to face him for relatively low money. Which is not to say that I would not love to see the fight cause I would.
You crazy? Pretty Boy Sergio (who I am a fan of) is done and has been done for a while now. New era. GGG by KO inside 3 against old man Sergio. Sergio had some great fights but it's over now.
"we started from the bottom now we here! We started from the bottom now the whole country comin' up!"
Sergio is a warrior he wouldn't think twice about taken the fight .... Whether or not that's a smart choice is anyone's idea Anyone who thinks GGG would walk right through him is daft though.. Even this version of sergio is quick enough and has enough power to back GGG up abit and we've yet to see how GGG copes under abit of pressure Personally i do think GGG stops sergio mid to late rounds but I don't think he has it all his own way.. Martinez is too skilled and seasoned for that... I'd love for him to win and retire though... One of my fav boxers in recent years
Good case of "what have you dont for me lately" , or in this instance " how have you fought lately". I dont think that when Martinez was in his prime anyone would have given GGG big odds to beat him. GGG might be the real deal. But we know for fact that Martinez is, I just dont see Martinez letting GGG control the range, the pace, and the fight the way he has been able to with his opponents thus far. Not when he was in his prime and unhobbled by injury and wear.
