Recently watched one future champion fight his debut fight against another man who later went on to become champion himself. Any guesses who these fighters were?

Yeah, that was it. Couldn’t understand why Carbajal’s people would put him in with such a live opponent for his first fight. I guess Grimsby must have just been a complete unknown, coming from Minnesota and all?

There aren’t that many pros at the lower weights so it’s much more likely for two future champs to be matched early.

Even so, there were probably enough journeyman in the area that could have been offered the fight.

I think having such a stern test so early might have helped Carbajal in the long run, as it gave him an idea of how to deal with adversity from the start.

I think he was an unknown. Decent fighters can come out of nowhere at the lower weights. Eric Aiken is another.

I think Sor handed Chocolatito the shock of a lifetime.

SSR was previously a champ so the expectation among some hardcore fans was that he would give RG a really good fight, at any rate. Likewise, you'd have to think that they knew that Grigsby had won the Golden Gloves in his region more than once and was capable of giving their guy a bit of a test. IIRC, the announcers stated that they expected Grigsby to be the most capable of any of the opponents that the debuting Olympians had faced that evening.

Ok, you got me. I didn’t know he was Golden Gloves.

Sor was understood to be decent. But sparking out Roman and beating Estrada was not the level anyone expected.

Yeah, I'll give you that. Sor has exceeded expectations for sure; and there are indeed guys that can come out of nowhere at the lower weights to beat more highly regarded fighters.
