Who can come up with the shortest connection between Sullivan and Fury - where the chain of names between the two contains at least one world champion from each of the 8 original divisions? A multi-division world champion can only represent one division! So if you, for example, want to include Dick Tiger in the chain, he can only count as a MW or LHW champion.
Yes, it can certainly be done! There are several very knowledgeable posters here on Classic... so I thought, at least some of them would see this as a fun challenge.
Dangit, he just had to insist on very knowledgeable posters and disqualify us. If you'll excuse me, I'll be going back to creating the 50th iteration of a thread about Rocky Marciano's undefeated record now. Hmph.
To try. John L. Sullivan (first HW Champion by some criteria) - Gene Tunney (Retired Lineal Champion) - Rocky Marciano (Retired Lineal Champion) - Lennox Lewis (Retired Lineal Champion) - Tyson Fury (Retired Lineal Champion???)
I think, I made this sound wrong... even those with only limited knowledge, such as yourself , are of course welcome to give it a try!
Good one Sullivan to Jack Burke to Jack Dempsey (Middleweight) to George LaBlance to Young Mitchell to Torpedo Billy Murphy (Featherweight) to George Dixon (Bantamweight) to Johnny Hughes to Jimmy Wilde (Flyweight) to Pancho Villa to Jimmy McLarnin (Welterweight) to Barney Ross (Lightweight) to Cerino Garcia to Lloyd Marshall to Archie Moore (Light Heavyweight) to Muhammad Ali to Larry Holmes to Oliver McCall to Francisco Pianta to Tyson Fury (Edit replaced Holmes to Tyson To Williams Chisora to Fury)
Excellent! I count 19 names between Sullivan and Fury... the same as my own best attempt: Sullivan Corbett (HW) Kid McCoy (MW) Jack Twin Sullivan Levinsky (LHW) Carpentier Georges Gloria Jimmy Wilde (Fly) Joe Lynch (Bantam) Memphis Pal Moore McLarnin (WW) Ross (LW) Armstrong (Feather) SRR Maxim Moore Ali Holmes Mercer Wlad Fury As you can see, only two names are needed between Holmes and Fury, which would cut the number in your chain to 18 - one better than mine! There are of course countless other ways to connect the two, but I would be surprised if anyone can come up with a shorter route (then again, who knows?)... ... so very well done! Ah, I see that you did find a shorter way from Holmes to Fury!
The various intersections are interesting How many times did you reroute it? My initial idea was Jack Burke to Jack Dempsey to Tommy Ryan to Philadelphia Jack O'Brien to Joe Walcott to Joe Gans to Kid Herman to Abe Atell to Pete Herman to Jimmy Wilde to Pancho Villa to . I then noticed Light Heavyweight was unnecessary due to Archie Moore, and I stumbled upon Hughes fighting both Dixon and Wilde. I knew Dixom fought Murphy and Murphy fought some bigger guys so I looked for a link between Murphy and Sullivan. I had to look for a different route between McLarnin and Moore as ended up skipping Gans with the new route (I initially went McLarnin to Young Corbett III to Archie Moore)
With enough work I think lower solutions could be found, probably 16 maybe 15. It's often possible to go shockingly lower than early solutions to problems You would need to be careful with boxrec brute forcing though. For example Mysterious Bully Smith and Tim Callahan would potentially be a useful link considering who they fought, problem is it never happened (it was probably Turkey Point Billy Smith)
Yes, so many ways to "attack" a problem like this. I also had names like Gans, O'brien and Dixon in mind, but my main focus was really to find the shortest way to Carpentier - as I knew, he shared an opponent (Gloria) with Wilde. Seemed a smart way to go from the higher divisions, all the way down to fly and bantam! By the way, if you can cut it down to less than 18 - I would be VERY impressed!
