LAS CRUCES - Fighting a local hero isn't new for 154-pound WBA world champion Austin Trout.

But Australian legend Anthony Mundine is a different story.

"He's a celebrity over there," said Trout, who is slated to take on Mundine on Aug. 24 in Melbourne, Australia. "He hangs out with Russell Crowe."

In the boxing world, the Mundine fight is as close to a done deal as you can get two months out.

Trout's manager, Bob Spagnola, said he expects a contract to look over this week.

But Trout has been training specifically for the 36-year-old Mundine for the past two weeks since beating Mexican fighter David Lopez on June 11.

"I've been working on letting my left hand go more and just tighten things up that I saw in my last fight," Trout said.

The Lopez fight was Trout's fourth victory on his opponent's home soil, but Mundine will be a different challenge.

"There will be 20,000 people there," Spagnola said. "Mundine is a legendary figure."

Mundine's father preceded him in the boxing realm and the younger Mundine made his name as a rugby player during a career that lasted seven years.

Tony Mundine compiled an 80-15 record as a middleweight in the 1970s, winning Australian national titles in the middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions. He lost his title shot to Carlos Monzon by way of knockout in a 1974 WBA middleweight title fight in Argentina.

The younger Mundine didn't start fighting until 2000, but has already won two WBA world titles with a 42-5 record with 25 knockouts.

"Now he is attempting to win three different world titles and would be the first moving down in weight," Spagnola said. "We have been talking about this fight for six months before Austin ever won a world title."

Mundine defeated Antwun Echols by unanimous decision in 2003 for the vacant WBA super middleweight title at 167 pounds. He defended the title once before losing to Manny Siaca by split decision in 2004. He regained the title in 2007 with a knockout victory over Sam Soliman and added the 160-pound WBA international middleweight title in 2009 with a victory over Shannan Taylor.

Mundine has lost just once since 2005. His last fight was in June when he stopped Xavier Toliver.

Yet at 23-0 with 13 knockouts, Trout has proven capable of going on the road and returning with a win.

"If it were the first time, I would probably have some nerves," Trout said. "I'm used to it by now."

From a business side, the Mundine fight has been a smoother ride than the Mexican fighters.

"Mexico has great fighters and great fans, but they have a different way of doing business," Spagnola said.

The fact that each of Mundine's fights has been broadcast on Australian Pay-per-view television also sweetened the deal.

"It's a good name and a good resume with a good following," Trout said. "It will help up my stock and get that next big fight."

1/ Trout's manager, Bob Spagnola, said he 'expects a contract to look over this week'.

Sounds to me like: 'I'll have a look at their first draft and then ring them and ask for more money'.


2/ "Now he is attempting to win three different world titles and would be the first moving down in weight," Spagnola said. "We have been talking about this fight for six months before Austin ever won a world title."

Sounds to me like: 'We know how much they want this match-up and how long it has been in their sights. Once we've read the draft they are sending us we'll ring them and ask for more money'.


Spagnola is holding a strong hand here. Kostya will be parting with more cash than he anticipated to get a look at it.
