ward fought paul smith(who wasnt a tuneup for kovalev....this was before he signed with hbo...before he agreed to face kovalev) and came in at 171(he let smith weigh 176)...in order to keep his weight between 168-175 in case golovkin actually wanted to fight....around this time he was hollering golovkins name on various boxing sites....thats not a tuneup for kovalev

alex brand was considered a joke of a fight...when it was announced that he was fighting him everyone said "this is a joke...a waste of time this does nothing to help him prepare for kovalev".....so in essence this is ward forcing hbo to pay him to spar on tv....in order to get the kovalev fight signed ward forced hbos hand...ward missed 2 years of pay and his recouping it by forcing hbo to pay him to spar.......you cant even consider this a tuneup for kovalev....this is a glorified sparring session and every thread here when it was announced suggested it does nothing to help him prepare for kovalev

barrera is the only tuneup....at best...if im stretching it i could give you 2 fights....if i count brand......smith was not a tuneup for kovalev...it was a payday and he was keeping his weight in between classes in the event that a big fight with golovkin materialized.....ward showed he could still stay near 168 ....
