Tasana Salapat vs. Alvin Orot Medura, 10 rounds @ bantamweight

 

Round 1 - 10-9 Medura, proving to be a bit more of a pest than Salapat bargained for. Despite his comparatively ignominious record (allowing for the fact that Filipino domestic schedules are much rougher than often quite padded Thais'), shorter stature and lesser wingspan the underdog is managing to establish a stronger jab game, and denying the long tall southpaw any of the body 1-2s he's seeking from outside with footwork, as well as riding with a lateral tilt away from his right hooks. Salapat only ever grazing, and eating some line drive right hands.

 

Round 2 - 10-9 Salapat, 19-19

Still more accurate jabbing from Medura, but he's getting backed into the ropes and slashing with desperate short check hooks, moderately effective but not discouraging Salapat. Right upper-hooks from Salapat catching Medura even in spite of his crafty slipping and leaning against the ropes.

 

Round 3 - 10-9 Salapat, 29-28 Salapat

The home fighter's defensively unimpressive performance continues, head remaining static and getting tagged by jabs in multiples as he applies pressure, with his mop of hair being frequently stood on end - BUT, he is dialing in that straight left down the pipe with some venom, hurting Medura often with it. Vicious 1-1-2s from Salapat now, really snapping both jabs so that it's basically a triple power shot combo.

 

Round 4 - 10-9 Salapat, 39-37 Salapat

Medura lighting his man up on the backfoot with the orthodox counter 1-2. Medura doing a good job staying off Salapat's jab taking extra steps, making him overextend, and scooting away with his tummy sucked in to refuse him any plunging left crosses downstairs. Medura is pressed into the ropes in the final minute and seems to brush a glove on the canvas dipping at the knees in reaction to a Salapat right hook on the body. Confusingly, ref no-calls it. Medura hurt with more body shots and Salapat pours on right hooks up top as well.

That was a wild sequence; I was about to write '10-9 Medura', then was planning on '10-8 Salapat'

 

Round 5 - 10-9 Salapat, 49-46 Salapat

Big fella just murdering the body. Medura getting in clean counter combos and probably still with an edge in headshot connects, but he's getting his core torn up.

 

Round 6 - 10-9 Salapat, 59-55 Salapat

It only took him the first goddamn half of the scheduled contest , but the favorite has found his sea legs or mojo, what have you, and is now making this look every bit the mismatch it appears on paper. Stalking with a spidery posture on splayed legs but still looming over Medura, leaned off-center, jabbing his way in, peppering head and body shots. Medura now seeming helpless, all that spunk from earlier dissipated.

 

Round 7 - 10-9 Salapat, 69-64 Salapat

Man, poor Medura just can not catch a break. He complains of a headbutt that leaves him woozy, then is possibly hit with a low blow, then has the ref blame him and sternly warn him for the butt. All moot as he's getting walked around the ring, target practice for Salapat. Medura with some nominal 1-2s keeping himself on the scoreboard but not doing any damage or piling up nearly enough points.

 

Round 8

Salapat giving Medura no respect now, just straight up colonizing his face with the right jab. Medura wobbled from a left cross, does a stanky leg and is hit with some looping shots behind his ears as Salapat rushes to swoop in and finish the job. Medura hangs in, creditably. Tough kid. He is even jabbing and 1-2ing back at Salapat, but not gaining himself any purchase. Salapat devouring him with torpedo lefts on the body from outside.

As close to a 10-8 as you can get without a mandating event.

Round 9 - 10-9 Medura, close, 88-83 Salapat

Nip and tuck, with Medura obviously arm-weary but rallying, fighting his guts out with overhand rights beaning Salapat upside the head and mixing in some body shots of his own in the phonebooth. At range Salapat is tickling with the southpaw jab and lunging in with lefts but they're not really sticking. Once again this insanely biased ref wags a finger in Medura's face after SALAPAT BUTTS HIM. Not flagrant or anything, it was incidental, but the same pattern as before - Medura charging in with a 1-2 and Salapat bowing to meet him, effectively causing the headbutt.
