I'm not surprised, I'd imagine most retired fighters still get the itch to come back. I don't think anything will come of it, though. Surely he doesn't need the money.
He also said he'd need at least 6 months to properly prepare. I think it's a bad idea obviously but if anyone will be in shape to come back, it's him.
He had reconstructive surgery on his shoulder you dick. TWICE. He unified the division when he fought Zab, and Mitchell was on something like a 10 fight win streak and rated pretty highly in the division, not to mention the controversial stoppage in the first fight. It was an important fight at the time you bunghole.
Heres a Interview with Kostya Tszyu just the other day. He still looks in pretty good shape. http://www.foxsports.com.au/boxing
I think it's being blown out of proportion a little bit. He's said the same thing for quite a while in Australia when asked if he is retired ... but he won't come back. I think he just entertains the thought out loud now and again. His career long trainer Johnny Lewis said Tszyu should not get back in the ring ... and that if he did, Lewis would not train or corner him. Some of his regular sparring partners like Sam Soliman also said he wasn't the same in the lead-up to the Hatton fight. When the people who have been with you for years behind the scenes see a significant decline and don't want to work with you anymore ... you gotta listen. He couldn't pull the trigger in that fight either ... aside from those hail-mary right hands at the start of each round, Tszyu threw one of his lowest numbers of his best weapon. The Hatton fight showed me an old fighter. I'd be concerned with him getting back in the ring with any top level fighter now. Even sadder if young fighters used his name to pad their resume. As someone else said, he's done done done.
Wow - This shows how deep your understanding of the 140lbs division was at the time. No one wanted to fight Tackie when Tszyu fought him and Tszyu laid a boxing lesson on him the same night Gatti and Ward fought the first of their amazing trilogy. Mitchell had MORE than done enough fighting leading up to the second Tszyu fight to be considered the number one contender at the weight with 7 wins in between the first and second Tszyu fights. Most overrated "every" my ass.
