I don't think he ever had elite defensive abilities. It could be his lack of defensive was not exposed until the pros.

And if he had these abilities, but chooses not to use it, then what good is it to have it in the first place?

 

He did not show elite defensive ability as a professional fighter.

He was stopped twice.

Almost all of his biggest name opponents were past their best.

He is overrated.
