A few things cross my mind when I read this. 1 There is zero surprise that this fight didn't happen 2 Arreola would have beaten Tua and may have been the first guy to stop him 3 Tua is and has been done as a fighter of any signifigance. The one thing you get left wondering is why now for Tua? His whole career has seen him face the best fighters out there. His resume ranks as one of the best in the division over the last 20 years. Now, if he even fights again, I expect him to face the Robert Hawkins of the division. Too bad because this would have been a good fight and Tua could have put himself into position for even bigger fights if he would have won.
Fights still possible, and I think it will happen. There's no money or use in fighting journeymen anymore. And no better opponent (and money) than Arreola amongst the ranked fighters. No, Tua either fights Arreola or retires. He has nowhere else to go. Can't go back down (i.e. Fox, Hawkins, etc.) and can't go up (Toney, Rahman, Klit, etc.) because there is no money or interest, he'll lose, or the fight won't get made. Nope, here's his opportunity on a platter (excuse the pun).
You are right, Diehard. This is it. Now or never. Would you close down 'DavidTua-net' if he pulls out? Would it be the last straw?
You all act as if its Tua, himself, who is asking for too much money. We don't know how much of a say, if any, that Tua has in the financial demands of putting his fights together. And if this fight does not get made, I don't think that's the end of Tua's potential future. There are other fighters in the heavyweight division, besides Arreola, you know. Last I checked, there were many. Granted, it'd be a disappointment if the Tua Arreola fight don't happen, but the possible future career of Tua does not hinge, solely, on Christobal Arreola fighting him, or not. Tua Barrett........Tua McCline........Tua Estrada..........Tua Brewster........Tua Golota
He's the easiest guy in the top 10 stylewise and would vault him forward because Arreola is a HBO fighter that's been getting publicity. He's not getting any younger.
Tua's career is dead in the water right now. He needs this fight BAD. You can say there are "other fights" - but none have been happening at all. This is a make or break fight for the Tuaman.
Tua Barrett........Tua McCline........Tua Estrada..........Tua Brewster........Tua Golota Why would Barrett, McCline, Estrada, Brewster, or Golota fight Tua? Big risk, little gain. True of the young guns also like Johnson, Minto, Chambers. And from Tua's perspective, these fights would earn him LESS money than with Arreola. Arreola is hot, these guys are not. That's why there's so much excitement about this match-up. AND, it leads to the V.Klit vs Peter winner for a belt. The other guys don't do that.
I am not saying the Arreola fight is not a great fight and a decent chance at beating a top ten opponent. I fully agree that it is. But if this fight does not happen, it don't necessarily mean Tua has to hang it up. There is a big world out there, and many other possible opponents for Tua to fight. Maybe not too many as good as Arreola would be (easy picking and a decent name), but Arreola is not the be all end all fight of Tua's potential future. That's all I am saying.
Tua's fans are about to completely give up on the guy, Heavyright. If he gives this one away it is simply a bridge too far. We have had it.
Heavyweight, I hear what you're saying. He could definitely fight on. But my question to Tua is, "why would you fight these other guys for less money, whom some would be harder to beat (Brewster, McCline, Barrett), and wouldn't get you a potential belt?" It wouldn't make any sense. I think Tony Thompson got $75,000 or so to fight Klit? Tua is getting six figures for several rounds. And a very good chance of winning.
If they are asking for an unreasonable amount, that tells us that Tua's manager don't really want the fight, plain and simple. His manager, or promoter, or whomever is pulling the strings, knows full well that Tua 2008 is not in the position to demand big money, and if they are, it is obvious that they don't want to fight Arreola, and are merely pricing themself out, as so many do who don't want a fight, but dont' want to come out and admit they don't want the fight. Maybe Tua has not progressed like we were hoping. I know he's yet to fight anyone with a pulse, and maybe that's for a reason. Maybe Tua and his trainers know he's not gotten enough back yet. WHo knows. Maybe he has progressed as far as he's gonna get, and knows it, and don't want to take a fight he knows he'll lose. I am not too savy on Tua's comeback, but I did read he went the distance not long ago with someone he shoudl have walked through. Or so, I read.
I had lunch with a boxing man when I was in Vegas for last weeks fight. He is putting together a card for Planet Hollywood. He has offered 1 mil each to both Tua and Briggs to fight eachother. I have no online source. I heard it right from his lips. He did not say that it was a done deal but did claim that the Casino and a Cable Network were behind the fight.
