Tua vs Cameron is being hyped as "Fight of the Century" down there,,,
But from an outside observer it almost looks like a walk over for Tua.

Is this really a competative match-up? ... Does Cameron actually have a shot at the upset, or is this essentially a hyped up promotion for the Tua-man's comeback and final title run? :think

It was originally entitled "NEW ZEALANDS Fight of The Century" but the media down here dropped the NZ bit.
It doesn't seem to be competitive, should be a walk in the park for Tua really - short of Cameron drastically transforming virtually every part of his style and skill level.
The thing is boxing isn't a very popular sport here, and because Cameron has spent the last couple of years doing a road show knocking out journeymen americans (Ahunanya excluded) the public has bought the hype. Joe Blogs kiwi thinks Cameron at least has a shot because of this.
Yeah it's a hyped up comeback for Tua, but Camerons team laid the hype foundation a long before Tua signed the contract.

Now you're getting into the geo-political issues that plague NZ.
Suffice to say we're basically a country full of immigrants (dont let anyone tell you any different) and we are (usually) happy to adopt anyone who wants to make their home here and represent us :D
David did this a long time ago, and while he still represents Samoa he is also a Kiwi.
I'm ashamed to say that a lot of Kiwis were very fickle with him though, happy to claim his accomplishments on behalf of NZ when he was doing well, then dropped him like a hot potato when things went badly.

yeh i think that it is hyped hardcore here in nz , like old dark shark said it isnt to popular sport here , but im glad it is hyped , the country is pretty much divided up the middle as to who will win , i have tua to win in the 8th round , only put that bet on cause it is paying $14 , but looking fwd to it anyway

Its just big because Cameron is the only time Tua has had any sort of hometown rival, Cameron is pretty clearly the best HW in Australia and NZ, hes not a world beater but hes ok, before that we had noone apart from Jimmy Thunder who was on the downslide when Tua appeared.
So yeah, first time we have two decent heavyweights at the same time for a very long time.

In addition to DarkShark's post, NZ has like maybe 5% of population are Pac Islanders, they are part of the furniture now like Hispanics I guess in USA. NZ basically ran Samoa for some years after WW2 (was German colony iirc) and still has close political and financial ties to it.

Shane Cameron is as kiwi as they come though, a part-Maori (native NZers) farm boy, he used to be a hill-country shepherd with his sheepdogs and likes pig hunting (dogs + knife) etc

Tua is still a large part NZ though but a lot of people dont like him because they dont understand he had to make it big in USA because Lennox Lewis would not want to fight in teh Gisborne Farming Insititue Tearooms

I'm a Kiwi, and don't open that can of worms.

Some Pacific Island nations have more of their citizens living in NZ than in their own country. As said before, NZ has taken a major role in assisting Pacific Island nations over the years, and really Pacific Islanders are part of the furniture so to speak.

NZ in general isn't hung up on nationalism in terms of to become a citizen of NZ you have to give up your old countries citizenship, it's more than happy to have dual nationality citizens.

I think our immigration policy for years basically amounted to "come on in bro, there's plenty of room here!" :D

It is starting to change - especially with Australia not being happy about people using NZ as a stop off point, where you get into easy, become a citizen - which then entitles you to live in Australia with virtually the same rights as an Australian citizen. It kind of dilutes Australia's own migration policies.

Anyway, enough of that, Tua is a Samoan, and he's a Kiwi. Very common thing in NZ.

Talking to my Kiwi mate, the fight is being promoted hard but very few people tend to care about it.

Shane Cameron is the under dog but most seem to think he'll make a fist of it.

My point of view is that Cameron will be dominant until he gets tired, if he can stay away from being tired, he'll win. But I believe by about Round 6 or 8, Tua will start closing in and by 10 - he'll have Shane laid out.

    Few Kiwis care about it???
Everyone i know are making an event of it, Be it going to the pub with the boys, or getting family and friends together for a BBQ and PPV the fight. People who have no interest in boxing, even wives and girlfriends are interested. Just had a text(SMS) from a girl who dislikes the idea of boxing (well her idea that its just about hitting someone) to pass on the weigh in results. It is a hot topic on radio. Kiwis seem to be very into it especially over the last week or two.

Initial money was on Cameron but since the postponement most has been on Tua.

Yeah Camerons fit, but then he's always dictated the pace of the fights he's been in, and he does tend to slow down past the 6th - not dramatically but noticably.
Pity we wont find out if he will or not in this fight - he'll never see the 6th!!!!
