    Tuaman gets another title shot

JOHN MATHESON - Sunday News | Sunday, 29 June 2008

DAVID Tua is one fight away from redemption.

That's the remarkable news today as Sunday News can reveal the Tuaman has signed up for a title elimination bout against unbeaten American Chris Arreola.
The prize for the winner of that match-up is a money-spinning date with WBC heavyweight champion Samuel Peters.
It means Tua whose career has been cruelly hijacked by legal battles will finally get the chance to try and land one of the belts he last challenged for against Lennox Lewis in 2000.
Last night Tua's New York-based promoter Cedric Kushner met with representatives from US pay TV network HBO and was about to ink the deal.
Arreola's promoter Dan Goosen was also believed to be at the meeting.
"Things are happening quickly," Kushner told Sunday News.
"The fight against Arreola could happen as early as September.
"The winner of that fight is guaranteed a shot at the title.
"I'm excited for David. If anyone deserves the chance to fight on sport's biggest stage again, it's him."
Tua has cancelled his scheduled fight in the Ukraine on July 12.
Kushner explained that the stakes were too high to risk an injury so close to the Arreola fight.
It will mean Tua will go into the Arreola bout after a year of inactivity following a combination of family tragedies and on-going court action against his former managers conspired to keep him out of the ring.
Tua, though, is unconcerned about not having fought since his second round knockout of Cerrone Fox last September his seventh consecutive win since his comeback in 2005.
Said Kushner: "David told me that he feels that if he gets 60 days training in before the fight he can take on anyone, anywhere."
And Tua won't be starting from scratch when he joins up with his Arizona-based trainer Roger Bloodworth next month.
He's been sparring with a number of local boxers in his south Auckland gym in recent weeks and is understood to have again acquired the services of the highly sought after personal trainer Lee Parore to fine-tune his fitness before heading to the US.
"David's in a very good place both physically and mentally," Kushner said.
"He's been patient, waited for his opportunity and now it looks like it's here."
Tua whose bout against Lewis in Las Vegas still rates as the single biggest sporting event to appear on New Zealand television will need to be at his peak to get past Arreola and earn the right to fight for a belt.
Despite his inactivity, Tua is ranked 23rd in the world while all four of boxing's world governing bodies have Arreola in the top 15.
The WBC ranks him as the No 7 heavyweight in the world and the IBF has him ranked No 10.
Last week he took his record to a perfect 24-0 when he destroyed the previously unbeaten heavyweight Chazz Witherspoon.
Bloodworth is excited about his charge going up against Arreola, whose profile has exploded since the win against Witherspoon.
"Going up against Dave will be a big step up for him," Bloodworth, a former trainer of champion Evander Holyfield, said.
"And I can tell you Dave is looking forward to stepping up his competition and getting to that championship fight he craves."

Great news, I wish Tua the best and hope he wins. Tua vs Peter would be a huge match, and a fight I would love to see.

Hi Shamrock. I was in Rome and saw a pub named SHAMROCK. I wanted to take a photo of it and send it to you but left my camera at the hotel. I was thinking of you.
How good is Arreola. He's been described anywhere from the Great American Hope to a good club fighter. I figure he's somewhere in between. His only fight of a top 100 fighter was Witherspoon, who is a boxer who tried to become a slugger. At least David won't have to go looking for him, as he comes right at you. The article said Tua has been sparring local talent. Any word as to who that is?
Keep up the good work at Shamrock gym. I'm in OZ now, on the Sunshine Coast. I'll look up your son at his gym in the next week or two.

Yea hi Diehard. Always good to hear from you. Yea mate, Tua has been doing this and that over here, he has his own gym now in Auckland. My memorys bad, I can't remember who David was sparring or exactly where his gym is, someone mentioned it at the gym the other night!

Yea mate, go and visit Mike in Maroochdore, he'll love to see you when you tell him your story. Tell him to get Seamus there to meet you too, its not complete until you've seen them both. You'll like Seamus, he's always got a tale to tell........haha

I'll go see them next week or two. Will he give me a discount and hold the pads for me? Forget sparring. I'm too old to get beaten up!

This looks to be a good fight and I expect Arreola to win through attrition.

Given Arreola's get-go-'em style, this is a winnable fight for Tua.
The biggest concern will be his weight and ring rust...Tua had been getting himself steadily into better shape last year but hasn't fought for 9 rounds to date.

I can't think of any other fighter in history that has two knockout victories over former champions within 30 seconds each (Ruiz and Moorer).

This would be a great matchup... hope it comes off. Right now I'd actually pick Arreola by UD. I think he just outlasts the older Tua.

I think they'll all be suprised at how easily Tua gets past Arreola.

    Early KO win for Tua.

Then I assume he'll then be Vitali's mandatory............?

Which will be another failed title winning effort :-(

I am a big fan of Tua but every time he gets a title shot it's against the only types of fighters that trouble him, big, tall fighters with a good jab (Lewis, Vitali next perhaps) or fast boxers like Byrd. He should try to go for the WBA title.
