Proven against what? Some old men and lightheavies? What is Tua only had the likes of Henry Maske and Charles Williams to beat in order to rule the heavyweight division? And as far as drawing cheers as Rez points out, the KKK was also drawing great cheers about the same time.
Jeffries looks pretty easy to hit in the Ruhlin fight , in particular he looks open to right hands .This may be rather misleading as accounts of the fight say he ignored Ruhlin's punches.Pollack says Ruhlin was in front after 2 rds, ,he was hitting Jeffries without much difficulty but could not hurt him though he bloodied his mouth .Jeffries began to land heavy shots to the body and Ruhlin is said to have lost heart at his own inability to hurt Jeff. This was Jeffries first fight without Tommy Ryan ,Billy Delaney trained him.It should be remembered that Ruhlin had been half killed by Fitzsimmons a year earlier.
Jeffries stopped Ruhlin faster than Fitzsimmons. Ruhlin in front? Bad research. Multiple sources would disagree. He won just one or two rounds. As for the film Jeffries had already hurt Ruhlin, didn't fear his punches and was in stalking mode. Hardly a time to judge defense. If you watch closely Jeffries side steps one of his attacks.
Tua is perhaps the worst boxer in the top 50. He beat his best early or by waiting them for run out of gas. If he was in there vs a guy with just an average chin or one with average stamina, pick him. That is not the case here.
I sort of agree with all of this. He was goo at smothering in close and he was always able to beat Gus to the punch from range but his defence did look very open. Given how easy he could hurt Ruhlin it's hard judging his defence purely from that.
Still can't read properly? Here is my post. Pollack says Ruhlin was in front after 2 rds God ,you are stupid! My point about the Fitz fight is that Ruhlin may have been diminished by the beating he received in it. Ruhlin was too ill to leave Madison Square Garden after the Fitz fight he was only semi - conscious ,all night , bleeding from the nose, mouth ,and ears. A cot was made up for him at the arena and a Doctor stayed the night with him, the next day he was transported to his manager Billy Madden's home for a two weeks convalescence. "Ruhlin collapsed in his corner and was not fully revived for so long a time that it was feared he had died. The fight was held under incredible heat. It was over 100F. outside the arena, as the city was caught up in one of the worst heat waves on record. Some 35 deaths were reported from heat stroke." Jeffries stopped Ruhlin faster than Fitz? Ruhlin's corner retired him between the 5th and 6th rounds.atsch Fitz floored Ruhlin 4 times and knocked him clean out at 2minutes of the 6th round, he was carried back to his corner. Read the fight report ! http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn85066387/1900-08-11/ed-1/seq-3/ Trying to educate pork is a thankless task.:-(
In front after two rounds? LOL. Really? Hardy in front before the TKO. Although it's a wasted typing space for me to tell you Jeffries won 4 of 5 rounds with sources it's certainly out there. :deal Fitz flattened Sharkey in two rounds. Now if you want to talk about one fight running another, it was Jeffries putting Sharkey in the hospital before he fought Fitzsimmons in the 1900's.
Seamus, To take a page for once out the dolt like Klitschko antagonists Tua lost to a blow-up super middleweight. Who? Chris Byrd. To make matters worse Tua punked out and lacked heart once Byrd hit him cleanly a few times. Tua had a tremendous left hook with limited range and a very good chin ,but a boxer he was not, and I question his fighting heart as he also punked out vs Lennox Lewis.
I have the best sources and research available on my desk as I type.Pollack's biography of Jeffries! Fitz fought Sharkey and Ruhlin inside a two weeks period koing both men in a total of 8 rounds, something Jeffries didn't ever manage to do to either! Fitz did this to try and get a rematch with Jeffries. He did, 2 years later, when he was nearly 40years old!!
