JOHN MATHESON - Sunday News | Sunday, 2 September 2007 David Tua could be given his second world title fight, in a bizarre out of court settlement sought by his promoter. Tua's US-based promoter Cedric Kushner is in court with world champion Wladimir Klitschko's promoter Shelly Finkel in New York on Friday. Kushner is suing Finkel for what he said was a breach of contract last year when Klitschko chose to fight Calvin Brock instead of his fighter Shannon Briggs. And Sunday News can exclusively reveal Kushner will offer to drop the case if Finkel agrees to give Tua a title shot early next year. "I drop the suit, they give us the fight ... that's the plan," Kushner said last night. "It would be a win-win for them. "Klitschko is due to fight in the first two months of next year and they are still searching for an opponent. "Obviously, because I am the one taking them to court, I'm in a position to control any out of court settlement and I'll be looking to use all the leverage I can to get David the shot at the title he deserves." Klitschko is generally regarded as the top heavyweight in the world and most credible champion. He won the IBF and IBO heavyweight championship belts with a TKO against Chris Byrd in 2006. He has since defended against Brock, Rau Austin and Lamon Brewster. He was set to fight in November but was taking the rest of the year off to recover from an injury in his left hand. Finkel said a fight against Tua was a possibility when Sunday News spoke to him before we learnt of Kushner's plans. "I think Tua could interest us," said Finkel, who at one stage promoted Tua in America. "He's a big puncher. I know how good he is. If he can do to a higher ranked boxer what he did to Saul Montana he would be right on our radar screen." Kushner vowed to get Tua a title fight "within six months" after his charge's win against Montana three weeks ago. And last night Tua said he was ready to go if given the green light by the Klitschko camp. He said he was in a better physical and mental state than he was seven years ago when he fought for the heavyweight championship against Lennox Lewis in 2000. "I used to say boxing was more mental than physical," he said. "That's what I knew then. Do I regret saying that? No. But do I believe it now? No. "Age has taught me I've made a few mistakes over my career. Now I know it's all about the four elements the physical being, the soul, the heart and the mind. "When the opportunity to fight for the title presents itself, I'll be ready. And I won't be in shock. I've fought for the title once and the lessons have been learnt. Trust me." Tua late TKO!:rasta
As much as I like David Tua, I see Tua-Klitschko looking like Brewster-Klitschko 2 without a stoppage.
yup. Boring fight with Klitschko jab keeping tua off and HBO commentators falling asleep and mentioning how the crowd is starting to leave the arena by the start of the 8th round. Wlad UD12
Wlad knocks Tua out, beating the bums he has been fighting doesnt make Tua a credible challenger again at 34 years old.
Tua has a chance but he cant fight Wlad like he did Lewis, he has to go into the fight like Mike Tyson and look for the knockout early. If Tua even taps wlads bounty soft chin its going to an early night but its a big if considering tuas' like 5 foot 9. I see an early knockout for Tua or a late stoppage for Wlad, its up to Tua to finally live up to his talent.
this will probably end up being a nonstop jab fest...keeping a distance with tua and doing that all night...
Sad, cause Tua can be dangerous, but after Wlad defeats him, everyone will bash him for facing another crappy opponent. However, I suppose this isn't much different than Holyfield being handed a title-shot after beating Savarese.
Tua hasn't earned a shot yet, he should first beat a top15 heavyweight...either way he will get schooled and KOed late by Wlad...
Wlad by KO. Tua too short to get by Wlad's jab and don't have to speed to avoid it and get inside. I'm getting tired of seeing Wlad fight these guys - they need to go ahead and unify the titles.
I don't think Tua gets knocked out unless his opponent brings a baseball bat into the ring. Wlad/Tua probably goes the same way as Lewis/Tua.
even a cast iron jaw will eventually rust, if there's a current heavyweight that can dent tua's jaw, it would be wlad. but, this fight appears to be a bad move by both parties: tua will most likely catch a pretty severe beating (whether or not he gets ko'd) and wlad has nothing to gain by facing a murderous puncher with pretty quick hands.
