I agree, but I think this should be rather the reason for Tua to get the best opponents available. After losing a decision against a gatekeeper now (which, judging by his last performance, is more than possible - and in fact should've happened already yesterday), he is practically done as a contender. He has no time to start again from scratch, especially fighting once or twice a year like he used to do lately. Instead, if he aims high and somehow gets a titleshot (sounds unrealistic? think about Rahman, Briggs or Sosnowski) he would at least get some decent $$$ for that. And, if he loses to someone considered almost unbeatable now (like Wlad or Vitali), he may pretend to be top fighter even after that.
I don't think Monte Barrett won the fight, David Tua beat Monte Barrett up for most of the fight. Monte Barrett in his corner looked like he was being molestered. Monte Barrett won 3 rounds, and thats about it. But it was a great performance from him to make it through to 12rounds, and make a fight out of it.
Yeah it was a close fight with Tua winning most rounds aside from 10-7 in the 12th, but brave as Monte was he was still very over the hill and it just shows Tua is now, even moreso than before. I always suspected his first fight of his comeback outside NZ would show where he was at, hes sparred Cameron and Ahunanya before and theres kind of a familiarity
All credit goes to monte IMO, hes even MORE past it then Tua having been stopped how many times in his last few fights?, and did what he needed to to pull out a cinderella finish. :good Tua should have a farewell fight then say adios to boxing, hes got nothing to be ashamed of and had a good career :good
