Nice little trip down memory lane. After the quick knockout, we hear from Lou Duva, Evander Holyfield (who recently lost his Championship to Riddick Bowe) Kevin Barry, and The Tuaman himself. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHc-8bojLg8[/ame]
Thanks for the post. I'm a Tua fan 4 life. Hope to see him return to form this year and deliver some knockouts.
^^I'm a fan for life as well. That left hook is pure dynamite. Tua had a quicker knockout than Mike Tyson did in his pro debut. I have Tua's fight collection on DVD and it's packed with explosive KOs. Always a joy to watch.
Also Tua was not as dirty as Tyson although the Moorer and Rahman 1 fights could be mentioned to his discredit. Tua didn't use elbows , clinches and holding and hitting as much as Tyson did . Tyson was much more dangerous in his missed hooks than with his landed ones.. What Tua had was pure power and very good punch resistance. Also underrated technique . He wasn't hit that much especially not by power punches .
Tua was so small back then. Watching this is almost like the Twilight Zone compared to seeing his form today. I also can't help but wonder what happened to Ron Humes? I can't find any info on him on BoxRec.
David did have the quicker KO in his debut. But I think Tyson was busier with his hands. He was really digging Mercedes in the body with those uppercuts and hooks. Though, he seemed somewhat tentative. David seemed much more confident in his pro debut. Though both fighters are somewhat similar, Tyson was showing signs of being the better fighter in general, especially if you compare their pro debuts. Tyson was a beast. A perfect synthesis of Sonny Liston/Floyd Patterson with Jack Dempsey's ruthless aggression. David Tua wasn't as talented as Mike, but boy, could he punch. I'd like to see them fight prime versus prime.
