I was thinking about the Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight, Can anyone think of a similar situation where a big fight (Pacquiao vs. Mayweather) hit a snag and the so called tune up fight did not go according to plan and one got beat, making the big fight not so big.
well this doesnt follow completely along w/ what you are getting at but a tune up fight to a potential big one that didnt go according to plan was pav/miranda. taylor/miranda had been talked about for a while w/ edison using that famous mouth of his even after the pavlik fight had been signed. pav/miranda didnt go according to plan. this could have made pay/taylor I not that big of a fight but the way kelly beat miranda did sort of create some momentum.
Hoya vs Sturm was close to being one.... Wlad vs Sanders probably would have led Wlad to LL should he have won, but i suppose it wasnt a true tuneup on the eve of a big showdown like that. to be honest besides Judah vs Baldo i cant think of one recently that truly fits the bill....
While it didn't completely ruin the party, I have no doubts that the Hatton/Urango and Castillo/N'Dojou fight didn't do much for their mega fight.
I guess the closest would be Green vs RJJ but it looks like they're still going through with Hopkins-RJJ. Somebody more familiar with the lower weight classes could probably clarify this but wasn't Ulieses Solis-Brian Viloria supposed to lead to Solis-Calderon?
Margorito vs Cotto...Cotto was suppose to fight De La Hoya for a mega fight and we all know how that went down!
Conversely, we can also point to Margarito vs Paul Williams. Arum wanted Margarito vs Cotto in November in MSG. Williams stepped in and put the ole kibosh on that.
while it was probably not considered a tune up fight but Cotto/Margarito spoiled the DLH cotto fight from happening. I have no doubt that had cotto beat marg, he would have gone on to demolish DLH. Pac is the fighter who actually benefited the most due to Cotto's first loss.
