Conn's plan for Louis was perfect, and I mean literally. Sure, Tunney was known for strategy, and I think he was brave enough to pull the Conn plan off and smart enough to stay out of Joe's way, but when a fighter does something perfect, it's not really fair to say that some other fighter would do the same.
He didnt simply catch him with one punch... the combination of punches that Dempsey threw was extremely impressive (regardless whether he was in his prime or not), every punch landing with power and accuracy. Whilst I agree that Louis is in contention for being the greatest combination puncher in history I dont know whether he could've done any worse (damage) than Dempsey did. Tunney was back with his senses at around the count of 4.
until he thought he could KO Joe Louis Conn may have had marginally better hand speed, but didnt have ring smarts or the greater ability to back peddle as Tunney did, having the ability to fight on the front or back foot, Tunney's tremendous body punching would ensure that Louis would tire desparately in the later stages.
He made a bo bo! In the plan you describe I think Tunney loses. Louis is a stalker, not a swarmer, and if he thinks he's body punching without getting punched in the face, hard, he's wrong. Tunney needs to work the Conn plan. Stay close, make the stalker punch and miss and stay as busy in terms of footwork as the runner with small moves. Stay just outside the kill zone and work in out. I think he could do it. He certainly wouldn't get stupid.
Yeah I know, but it was a single chilling left hook which had Tunney hurt and reeling before the barrage that followed sent him to the canvas. With all due respect despite Dempsey's power being legit top level, he'd obviously lost that bit of speed, snap and concussive effect with the layoff/inactivity. A peak Louis has the edge in terms of all round punching technique and is on the same level power and speed wise. Still, had Dempsey headed for the neutral corner stright away after the KD I think he would likely have finished Tunney shortly afterwards (even a faded Dempsey is a formidible 'finisher'), as it was he let Gene off the hook and afforded him more than enough additional time to regain his total composure.
Dempsey was a modest person, and he and Tunney became friends later on. I don't doubt that Tunney could have got up by the actual count of ten, but those extra seconds gave him valuable time to regain his senses, without them Dempsey would have put him away.
Tunney was too fast, too smart, and without weakness in stamina and durability. I think he out boxes Louis like Pastor, Conn, Walcott, and Farr did in many rounds with the difference being Tunney being the better out fighter, and harder puncher than the above men. Tunney UD over Louis.
Yeah, for sure. Having said that, even though I'm convinced that Tunney would give Louis one helluva tricky fight remember all that Louis needs is a half sniff of an opening. The events which unfolded in the first Dempsey vs Tunney bout have made up my mind that Louis would definitely find him at some stage (it ain't as if Tunney was clowning around with Dempsey either, that just wasn't him). If this transcribes (which surely isn't beyond the relms of probability) what will follow is going to be be the single biggest acid-test regarding Tunney's admitedly solid chin. Nonetheless he might just fall short of passing this test. :good
