Excellent point. Completely agree ...it was far too sugar coated ... too happily ever after ... Tunney was far more complex ...

    Dempsey is my man :good
I get on Mendacity's case about spelling , because he is so condescending , and self satisfied, you and he, hit it off a treat ,don't you.

    "Peas from the same pod".

ps. You have made some good posts lately,is someone ghosting them for you?

In terms of writing -eloquence and style, Cavanough's "Tunney" is a stand-out. He did a good job exhuming Greb, though his research wasn't quite as deep as we'd have liked it out here. And he did well with the Dempsey discussion.

A rather large complaint I have is that he barely touches Tunney's color line. No treatment of the careers of Tunney, Dempsey, or Loughran should be allowed to avoid that issue.

Great point. Not a word was said about any of the black contenders around at the time.

Well he was well known as a dirty fighter so I can understand why he may have had people dislike him.

I didn't like the way Cavanaugh went on about Primo Carnera and exclusively used the Budd Schulberg version of Carnera's career as historically accurate.

I just bought it and started reading it ... it is amazing but it is not a traditional boxing book .. it is a study of Tunney the man and his relationship with Shaw .. I am finding it fantastic !

If this is really Jay Tunney I would like to say that your book on your father is terrific ... I have read everything I could get my hands on regarding your father for the past twenty five years ... from "A Man Must Fight " to Nat Fleischer's bio to every article through the years to the latest Tunney bio .. you have managed to actually open up the man behind the mask and it is both fascinating and courageous on your part. It will be the definitive read for Tunney historians .. a wonderful job ... the photos alone from the orignial building on Perry street to his private cabin at his training camp are worth the price of the book ... cannot wait to finish it this weekend.
