Poll seems to be pretty conclusive thus far. If i had to take a stab at the character profile of the 2 that voted for tunney i would hazard a guess of between 65-80 yrs old and caucasian. I myself am caucasian but i have the ability to rank fighters with my head as opposed to my heart.
It's actually not a great stretch to see a pathway for Tunney to beat Ali. My thought however that in a tough fight Ali's great speed becomes the deciding factor. Not many hwts as great as Tunney in terms of boxing ability. He was spartan in his conditioning, he was tough, he was fast and he also was the greatest technical boxer to ever hold the hwt championship. No pushover for anyone.
Tunney was a great fighter, i would never deny that but Ali would land as many shots on Gene as vice versa. The difference being that Ali could take them better.
Well, you're guess regarding age is wrong. And that's a little smug and condescending, you have the ability to judge with your head as opposed to your heart. Blind as a bat, perhaps, in the matrix.
Do not assume the age or ethnic background of people who hold a given position, because if you do you will get a few surprises. You would also do well to remember that the people who are most certain of their opinions on this forum, are usually the ones who have the biggest gaps in their knowledge.
your heart prefers white fighters? To me it seems like you possess some paranoia regarding why people rank fighters. And it may be causing you to react to something that isn't there. Thus skewing your assessment, which should strictly be about the boxing ability of the fighters.
I prefer whichever fighters proved themselves by fighting the best available, regardless of skin colour. It appears quite obvious to me that a small number of posters just cannot bring themselves to give Ali his just dues and i stand by my opinion that this may not be entirely related to what he achieved in the ring Rez.
Never a truer word spoken and rings very true with those who see Marciano or Tunney as no.1 h2h. Imo of course.
There will always be outlandish people with outlandish opinions. Getting caught up in it hurts you in the end because you start approaching the idea from a skewed perspective. Anyway, I maybe overstepping my boundaries here, if so I apologize. I just think your analyses will slightly improve if you remove that element from the equation.
It seems like Don Turner rates him perhaps the best of all time, or at least top 3. Marciano moreso than Tunney has received some big praise from credible people.
