If Gene had hung around a little longer and faced a young Max Schmeling how's it pan out? Has Tunney still got enough to beat the young Schmeling or is it changing of the guard? 15 rounds in New York.
I'm the opposite, I give max more chances against this Tunney than Sharkey. Never really know with Sharkey, unpredictable but impressive at his best.
Assuming a straight line with Tunney's training regimen, I think he would have defeated all three of them, likely by decisions over Sharkey and Schmeling (unless they got busted up) and by a late-round stoppage over Stribling. Basically what I am saying is that the Tunney who fought Heeney would have beaten those guys. For this thread, I am positing that Gene doesn't lose any of his skills by 1930. If he lays off training for two years, it might be a whole other ball game.
Looked a bit up about Stribling. Idk against Tunney at that point in time, could be a close point win. I'll say, like you id favour Gene slightly but it's close.
I believe it's close, very close, to the degree that who ever wins you'll have half the audience in disagreement!
A more mature, seasoned and confident Tunney (a dividend of having beaten Dempsey twice) outboxes and pounds on Schmeling to win a 15 round decision
