prime for prime i see a slighly boring but very skilled boxing match, with tunney having more power but jim having slightly better skills.i think the expert corbett wins by dec.If he doesnt get caught by tunneys underated right hands or left hooks.(it might be mentioned that when tunney was a newly developed heavy at 189 he sparred the 59 year old corbett concetrating on skill and speed holding back on there power the aged pugilist astonished the 28 year old tunney with his feints, snapping jabs, quick and sharp left hooks and his swift movements, the session was 3 2 min. rounds only veiwed by a handfull of people who said the aged corbett(more than held his own with the much younger tunney)tunney later said in awe i honestly think he,s better than benny leonard,it was the greatest thing ive ever seen.If in jims era the 4 ounce gloves might also sting tunney a little more
Jack McAuliffe believed that Tunney was the better of the two. He said that while they were more or less equal technicaly Tunney gave a punch and took a punch much better. Using the Corbett Fitzsimmons fight as an analogy he thought that Tunney would have finished Fitzsimmons when Corbett had him down and would have got up from the punch that knocked Corbett out.
I think Tunney was an improved Corbett, with more strength and power,he takes a dec imo.Jim Jeffries talking about Heavyweights up to Louis rated Dempsey the best since his time and thought Corbett and Fitz would beat Tunney .
Tunney and Corbett sparred when Corbett was an old man and Tunney said he was amazed at Corbett’s speed. Tunney also said Corbett taught him things he was un-aware of. Though I think Tunney is a better overall fighter, I think Corbett was quicker and a better athetle.
Tunney did spar with Coprbett .Corbett wore long trousers as he said his legs werent too special at his age.Tunney was more durable I think, though going all those rounds with Jeffries is an acheivement by Corbett.
While I agree that Tunney was more durable Corbett's chin might be a tad underrated. He went 61 with in a ND with Jackson, 27 with Choynski, 23 with Jeffries, and 14 with Fitz. The Fitz Ko was a paralyzing shot to the lower floating rib.
I'd go with Tunney by decision because he was fast like Jim, beautiful footwork and stamina, fairly solid chin, but I think had the better overall offensive output and slightly more power - was more consistent with his punches. Corbett was a bit more cautious and I think Gene would edge him.
Corbett must have had some chin to take shots from the likes of Choynsky ,and the much bigger Jeffries ,who while not a super banger ,was a very respectable damaging puncher,I think though that Corbett's style of "hit and get out "made for a long shelf life,he didnt really ship a lot of punishment ,due to his evasive skills.
Corbett with his constant movement, feints, superb conditioning would give most anyone trouble in his prime. Not easy to find an ever moving target. It’s pure speculation as who would win a Corbett-Tunney bout. I could envision Corbett out speeding/out boxing Tunney and visa-versa.
