As much as I like Dempsey, and as annoying as all of the Dempsey haters on this board are, I can't pick him over Tunney.

I think it would be more competitive, but outside of just the right punch at just the right time (and Dempsey is capable of doing just that) I think Tunney beats him 9 times out of 10....Bad style match-up. I probably wouldn't pick Tunney over any other top 15 ATG.

Tunney, too fast and too skilled, the perfect style to neutralise Dempsey

It was too late, imo. Tunney had the style to cause even the 1919 Dempsey problems, and it would have taken nothing less than that version to have managed to beat Gene. By 1926/27,Jack was way over the hill.

I tend to agree with this.

And damn those Dempsey haters. In my day, a man's salt was measured by the lump in his pants at the very mention of the Manassa Mauler.

I've watched every thing I have been able to of both fights, often for extended periods in slow motion and believe without question a prime Dempsey beats him. In 1926, Dempsey had been so inactive for so long it is amazing he fought as good as he did ..
