Anyone think Tunney would have a chance against Liston prime to prime. Tunney was superb in avoiding the punishment of Dempsey using his jab and movement. Could he have done the same thing against Liston? Obviously Ali had great movement in his prime. Tunney is always underrated but could he duplicate what Ali did?

Liston was 6-1/2 and weighed between 200 and 220 throughout his career. Tunney was also 6 foot but came in for Dempsey fights at about 190. So the size difference would be meaningful much more so then was against Ali. Ali was not realy at much of a disadvantage cause he was 6'3 210.

I could see Tunney winning a 12 round decison just by frustrating Liston.

What about Dempsey vs. Liston? Dempsey was 6'1 190. I think despite the size difference Dempsey may have hit harder. This would have been a great won. I think Dempsey was maybe more sturdy mentally and would have risen from the convas to finish off Liston in 4th or 5th round?

I think Tunney was capable of frustrating and beating Liston...by points of course over whatever distance. Tunney had a great chin, great discipline and focus and the skills necessary to do what most of you no doubt feel would be an impossibility..to defeat the Bear.

  3. prime liston would ko dempsey and tunney, no way tunney might run from a prime liston during all the fight, who had the reach of valuev, with a hell of jab, liston only would need a decent shot to finish the fight. and i think that liston would catch him. about dempsey... his style was horrible against liston, who was bigger, stronger, harder puncher, who was versatile, with good speed... liston59 would ko they both.

Tunney had a much better shot than Dempsey ... Since we never saw Gene against anyone like this we can only speculate a boxer v.s. slugger type match up. Sonny is a bad match up for Jack ...

Dempsey basicaly has a good shot against anybody willing to go toe to toe with him.

Given the sucess that Ed Machen had against Sonny Liston, we cannot dismiss Tunneys chances.

Gene Tunney's chances I like better than Dempsey's..I maintain that Tunney is the most underrated great fighter of history.

  8. yes, except against foreman, liston, frazier and a peak tyson.

man, it prove nothing... every fight is different and every fighter is different. and anyway it would prove that tunney might survive but he would lose by ud.

Think about a Machen, but with one of the best boxing brains, very tough, good jab & right hand, plus the will to win.

Sounds like an Ali, but from the 1920's.

The prime Dempsey with good footwork and heavy firepower can not be overlooked.

Cleve Williams hurt Liston early in their fights, and Dempsey hits as hard as Williams and is probably faster.

Dempsey would try for a quick K.O. because a war of attrition would be very tough on him.

Of course Liston was big and strong, but the young Dempsey with his lean whipcord hands ,moved as fast as a middleweight on his feet. A prime Dempsey was so much more mobile than Liston, enabling Dempsey to get in close with his murderous left hook. Dempsey NEVER had trouble with big slower men. Dempsey by KO !
Joe Louis would have been Dempsey's biggest threat because of Joe's blazing handspeed and numbing power IMO...

  13. it is the final nonsense. even ali today is better than tunney lmao
liston would ko dempsey and early.
tunney might survive, but he would lose by ud.

  15. simplY because dempsey did not face ANY great big fighter , obviously a great small man beats a big heavy bag. even cus damato said that dempsey,marciano,partterson,frazier... would have no chance against foreman WHO WAS BIGGER AN SLOWER THAN DEMPSEY. STYLES MAKE FIGHTS. WILLARD WAS NO LISTON....
