I tend to agree with this...

Tunney could conceivable win a decision by frustrating Liston during the first half of the fight and potshotting him over the second half...Conceivable being the key term...

In Dempsey's case,no doubt he would try to come right at Liston,as he was ultra agressive...

That would spell his rapid doom,I'm afraid...

Ali had great respect for Tunney....and obviously used some of Gene's style.

Marty Marshall, Eddie Machen, and Ali all exposed Liston's problem with footspeed.

Every fighter has soft spots ... Liston proved he could dominate Marshall and Machen ... he lost to an extremely gifted Ali when he was about 35 .. that Ali beats up pretty much next to anyone so I would not exactly say it was a huge red flag for Sonny ...

And Ray Arcel and other GREAT trainers called Dempsey the greatest heavyweight they had ever seen. It is true Dempsey never faced a Sonny Liston, but it is equally true Sonny Liston did not face the prime panther
that was Jack Dempsey. He was for his weight very powerful, most of his weight was from the waist up, for he had a ballet dancers legs and a small waist. Please do not be deceived by his 190 pounds, they were trained for
speed and stamina those tougher days. No average 185 puncher would
bounce the giant Jess willard up and down like a yo yo. Willard whatever his faults was NEVER dropped before facing Dempsey. Jack Johnson hit Jess
with everything for 25 rounds, and couldn't budge big Jess.
Jack Dempsey was a tough, tough hombre, and shouldn't be underestimated...He loved the big boys, and his speed and power could
nullify any fighter in history. Dempsey might be outboxed but he was never
outfought at his pre- Tunney peak....

patterson was fast...and i know...i know....he lost bad to liston..but of course fear and balls got in his way and he stood in front of liston.

i do actually think that prime footage of dempsey looks fast.

Louis had not so fast feet...but his hands where very fast.

Frazier could actually have a fast frantic movement about him....

Holmes was not a speed demon..but definitly faster then liston...of course his main strength was skills...efficenticy of motion and timing.

Tyson was very fast at his best...

holyfied was no speed demon but clearly faster then Liston.

I would in fact say more heavyweight champs where faster then liston then slower..which is why i have a hard time with the statement that he had "good" speed.

ezzard charles was also much faster.....

not really saying who was better..just saying that Liston was definitly NOT fast....

tyson was fast on his way to the title, his head and lateral movement was sublime and great to watch.joe louis had a shuffling style which doesn't look dissimilar to sonny's.
floyd was a very small heavy anyway and was well out of his depth with sonny, especially the way he fought.

I wasnt going to mention it at first as he was a small guy with speed which seems logical and isnt the kind of "this guy was heavy but he was fast" example that the question seemed to ask for.

but he is in the thread so i figured id mention him.

Tunney was the prototype pf Muhammad Ali, so of course he would have beaten Liston.

Dempsey I'm not sure. It would be a slugfest and would depend on chin. Neither man was ever stopped (except for when they took a dive in the first round, fooling no one).
