He was not over the hill perhaps he had 12 fights winning at least 9 or 10 of them before Marciano fight.
What that has to do with fighting? Ali fought longer than Frazier but was not past prime compared to Frazier. Charles won 10 of his last 12 fights which is showing that he was still very good.
Charles was absolutely shopworn, the man went 50-50 right after fighting Rocky. Look at who he beat during that 9 fight winning streak and look at who he lost to. Charles went 1-1 with Layne as Layne was on his way out dropping losses to the likes of Willie James and Earl Walls. Marciano beat an aged Walcott, aged Louis, Rex Layne which isn’t much of a flex, and Moore who while being a good win did not have the legs or youth to compete with Marciano at heavyweight. Even then Rocky was still knocked down and landed upon consistently by Archie who didn’t have much of an option to use movement at that stage. I can see Greb taking all of these guys at the stage Rocky fought them, without taking the damage Rocky took. Same with Dempsey.
Shot Layne who he split a series with after losing to Walcott, shot to pieces Bivins, Wallace was basically a journeyman.
Again not valid argument to support the fact that Charles was past prime. He won 11 and lost 2 fight and one of those two against Harold Johnson was a robbery. Showporn can not win 11 fights even against bums and he beat great fighters like Layne,Bivins,Wallace,Satterfield and maybe even Johnson.
Aged Walcott beat Ezzard twice, Louis won 3 of his last fights and one of them was against Bivins, Rex Layne was good fighter in his prime. Moore was also very good wining against Valdes and many other great fighters and fought decade after Marciano ko. All of these guys would kill Greb including Layne.
Wallace, Layne, Satterfield and the Bivins that Charles fought were definitely not great fighters. In fact splitting a series with Rex Layne who he KO’d in ‘51 is more evidence that he was indeed shopworn.
Tunney is just behind Moore and Charles on resume, head to head he is better than both. Yeah, it is. Show me Marciano destroying men like 6"3 Firpo and 6"7 Willard in 2 rounds. And no, Joe Schmoe who never got a rating in his life isn't something I care to hear about. Nope. You can't even prove he hit harder than Dempsey or Tyson, he hasn't got one 200+ lbs win aside from an over the hill retired Louis. Taking 9 rounds to grind down Don C0ckell isn't something a guy who hit harder than Dempsey or Tyson would do. They weren't, but even if they were, at 33 and 41 years old they sure as **** weren't better than Gene.
A past it Walcott KO’d Ezzard but arguably should’ve lost the controversial decision fourth time around; According to an Associated Press poll of ringside reporters, 21 thought Charles won, 18 favored Walcott and two had it even. Odds are the KO is what set Charles’ downfall into motion, alongside potentially having his condition as early as 1951. Also, why are we still treating Bivins like a creditable win at that stage of his career? There’s no argument against Louis not being shot to ****. Greb would batter Layne, aging Moore who is already a good style matchup for him prime-for-prime, and the past it versions of Charles and Walcott. Dempsey would also clear this lot.
Rex was getting better and better he Koed Green Layne. Those are great fighters I mentioned especially Bivins,Layne and Satterfield.
They aren’t great fighters, except for Bivins who was a shot fighter by that time, and if Layne was green when he fought Charles in ‘51 why was he shot by ‘52-53? He got his best win in 1950 when he beat Walcott.
Based on resume he is not even close and based on skills he is amateur compared to Ezz and Moore. Yeah, circus bums that could not throw a jab like Firpo and Willard is greater win than Marcianos, laughable... Rex Layne ... 200 and over 6'. Louis ... 218 and 6'1". Lee Savold ... 200 and 6'. Jerry Jackson ... 254. Pat Connolly ... 213 and 6'5". Gilley Ferron ... 205. Johnny Shkor ... 225 and 6'5". Bill Hardeman ... 207 Artie Donato ... 202 Eldridge Eatman ... 207 Keene Simmons ... 201 Bill Wilson ... 229 and 6'2". I never heard someone could be past prime at 33, not even Ali and Tyson were with layoffs. Moore was 38 not 41, very close to his prime and fought 10 years later after that fight.
Nope, Moore would kill Greb, he is to slick for him and same goes for Charles. Layne would beat Greb because size after few rounds by TKO and Walcott would send Greb flying with that punch that knocked Ezzard cold and that dropped Marciano.
