Young is several echelons below Tunney. A wide decision with Tunney winning every round.

Gene wouldn't run, and he wouldn't have to. He'd knock jimmy the **** out with a cross counter.

Young was NOT a great fighter,I believe that much is palpably obvious. Young was a negative, safety- first ,defensive - minded boxer, who nullified your strengths ,but did not impose his own on opponents , nor did he go for broke, when he had the opportunity to do so.
Presented with his biggest chance to be world champion against a career heaviest ,complacent ,and disinterested Muhammad Ali , Young blew it.

He knew his way inside the ropes, and he certainly knew his way out of them .
Tunney would **** all over him ,faster, more mobile, tougher mentally, more determined, focused, with an iron will to overcome adversity , in short Tunney was a winner, he could have been the blue print for it.

Young did not have a champions mentality.
That's why he stayed a nearly man.

I'd give this one to Tunney, but I disagree with you thinking that it would be a walkover.

Gene would make the fight. He was smart enough to go downstairs, and keep his jab pumping continually. Work rate alone is massively in his favor. Unlike a woefully unconditioned Ali, Tunney would have been perfectly comfortable coming forward in an aggressor role. He demonstrated this with master boxer Gibbons. Jimmy was "comfortable" (if such a word can be used) with slowish but powerful sluggers like Foreman, Lyle and Jeff Sims. His record with clever and talented stylists like Norton, Ocasio, Dokes and Page is not great.

Can't see a comparitively light hitter such as Tunney doing what a wrecking machine like George Foreman failed to.

Out of the four mentioned above,Norton was the only one who fought a PRIME Jimmy Young.

Perhaps, but I think we can attack some meaning to the Ocasio rematch. Jimmy also rebounded from Cooney to be acclaimed by some as the comeback OTY for 1981. He twice beat Lyle pretty handily.

When hands were healthy, Tunney was quite a hard hitter. And he was far faster and more accurate than Foreman. That is what would do the damage.

When does the petition start around here to induct Young into the Hall of Fame?... In the Ron Lyle wing, perhaps.

Tunney, would have been, like Frazier, all wrong for Young....and of course for different reasons. Frazier because of the incessant swarming and pressure that he brought to bear, and Tunney because of his classic boxing style, discipline and speed. Tunney, as noted earlier, could and would switch to offense and lead sharply, and would effectively give Jimmy precious little to capitalize on in the way of slop.
