tunney vs young....

Nevertheless, Gene wouldn't stop Young, but would win a decision...and more decisively than just about anyone that I can think of.

 

Young is the furthest thing from a "great fighter". He was neither Great nor a Fighter.

Tunney would absolutely clean his clock in exchanges he would force. No running involved.

This is a walkover.

 

Most of those were against LH,mw... ANother thing Tunney was ahead of his time so im sure he was having target practice on a good majority of those guys.... Young had a good chin and was slick no way he gets stopped.

 

George Foreman was hindered by a style disadvantage and a complete lack of stamina and efficiency that Tunney would not be.

The responses so far seem pretty accurate though. Tunney remains one of the most undersold fighters ever, and Young one of the most oversold.

 

You're right about that part...but you can easily note that Young certainly has his fair share of detractors...mistaken as they are.:smoke

No one stops Jimmy Young. The Shavers fight was an abberation.

 

I wonder if Young had got the verdicts over Ali, Shavers and Norton to add to his Foreman and Lyle wins if he'd be written off quite as readily here?

 

young would have a great resume if he had all of those wins. but there's a reason he often missed out on the W. he lacked those intangible champion qualities. tunney on the other hand...

 

Yes because he got robbed :yep While Tunney supposedly was a little fortunate to get decisions over Greb/Loughran and not having to face the HW dangermen of Ali, Foreman, Shavers, Lyle, Norton

 

Tunney was tough as nails with his mind and body. Tunney would not coast or take rounds off in a losing effort. Tunney decisions Young.

 

the ali and norton fights were close, not robberies. have you seen the second shavers fight? didn't realise it was around...

i suppose where one blames bad luck, another blames the individual. young was 'unlucky' too often for me, so i go for the latter. but to each their own.

 

There is a reason he did not get those verdicts.

Tunney would probably tough it out in the end. Would be interesting to see which one got the better of battle in the clinches though. Both were adept at getting their blows in during a clinch as well as maneuvering their opponents whichever way they wanted.
