Mayweather, Tupou team up! This content is protected The services of trainer Jeff Mayweather were once again called upon as Tongan heavyweight prospect by way of Australia, Bowie Tupou (14-0, 11 KOs) will now be trained by Mayweather. The massively chiseled 6'2, 260 pound Tupou moved to Los Angeles from Australia about a year ago and is immediately relocating to Las Vegas to begin training with Mayweather to prepare for his May 17th fight against an opponent to be announced in Primm Valley Casino, Primm, Nevada. The card will be presented by Tupou's promoter Gary Shaw. Mayweather has been very busy recently, guiding Sultan Ibragimov to the heavyweight championship and he will be the head trainer for Steve Forbes in his career's biggest fight against Oscar De La Hoya on May 3rd. "I'm very excited about working with Bowie as I will get the opportunity to train him at a very important time of his career," stated Mayweather. "He comes to me with good work ethic and is willing to learn. Can't ask anymore from a fighter." Tupou stated, "When it's time for me to step up my level of competition, I want to be ready. I don't want to embarrass myself or my promoter. I'm grateful for everyone who has helped me in my training since I arrived in the U.S. but I needed to make a change. With Jeff as my trainer I feel confident that he can take me to that next level I'm seeking."
Interesting move by Tupou. Jeff is a vastly experienced trainer with great boxing knowledge it can only help Big Bo develop. Tupou is definitely someone worth keeping tabs on in the near future. On another note i recommend all u guys to check out the Countdown for De La Hoya vs Forbes. Some very good insights into the Mayweather family with Roger, Floyd Snr & Jeff. Jeff came across as the only sane one & even broke down on camera discussing his mum. Seems like a nice genuine bloke.
Yeah i have read interviews and he seems like a good bloke. He is not driven by his ego, hope his fighters do well.
great move, hope to see him on tv sometime, i havent yet to watch him, somehow ive always missed his fights when he was in australia so will be good to gauge where he is at the moment...
Its great to see a few of our fighters now heading o/s to advance their skills under more experienced trainers. You only have to look at those who have & what they achieved to see the huge benefits the move has. Peden won a world title, Billy Dib will eventually win won & now Tupou is going. it will show in 12 months rather than sitting back here in Oz & belting another 2 or 3 tomato cans & going round the same ol circle.
Bowie seems to have the right attitude to his game. It's refreshing. Actually I hope he steps up pragmatically - as opposed to Boytsov who has been fed nothing but easybeats in prep for Hawkins. Can anybody confirm that Tupou turns up in top shape for every bout?
But it he did has definite stamina issues before he left oz. Might have to lay off the benchpress and go for a jog. Im sure Mayweather will have this all worked out in time. Bowie is an amazing talent for a man who had 1 amateur fight.
I think a lot of that will come with experience. How many young fighters do you see that can train the house down, but run out of gas?
