In all out brutal war, I favour the Leamington Licker, he's more physically gifted and would be able to out match Gene's chin, power and strength.

Fullmer, stronger, more rugged and resourceful in his crude way, would maul Turpin, who couldn't handle Bobo Olson....nevermind Gene Fullmer.

No middleweight is stronger than Turpin in his prime. Anyone trying to maul Turpin would wish they hadn't.

Turpin was beset with personal problems when he fought Olson. He didn't even want the fight.

If you averaged the fighters out over the course of their careers, Fullmer beats Turpin but if it's prime vs prime, I'm going with Turpin.

Unfortunately, his prime was very brief.

Agreed ,but reservations about the strength, Fullmer was one strong SOB,not a favourite of mine, but very effective.Turpin spears him all night and has the power to keep him honest.

No MW is stronger? Strong hyperbole.

Not at all. Sugar Ray Robinson said he never fought a man stronger in the clinches than Turpin and I've never seen anyone else do what Turpin does here:

With one arm, he flings his opponent back and forth like he's a rag doll.

He was one of the only guys lifting weights at the time, so he had a leg up in physical strength that was compounded by his length and athleticism. And general awkwardness in a clinch. I saw him as more Herol Graham than D1ck Tiger in the strength department. He and Fullmer would be interesting, though. Ugly, too. I’d probably go with Turpin at 100%, but he wasn’t reliable enough to bet on.

He made a similar excuse after losing to Jean Stock earlier in his career, by the way. Women issues. He might’ve been physically strong but he was clearly mentally weak. That’s a big part of what goes on in the ring.

Turpin was naturally very strong and seemed obsessed, even from when he was a child, with making himself even stronger.

A wrestler who knew Turpin years later commented that he had tremendous sinew strength and that when Turpin held his arm out parallel to the ground, the wrestler could neither push Turpin's arm up or pull it down.

But he clearly had a lot of emotional problems. He's one of my heroes and I have to admit that he was the cause of most of his own problems - spending money like there was no tomorrow even when he was heavily in debt and earning very little money working in a scrapyard.

If he had a responsible management team who ensured he paid his taxes and if Turpin agreed to having a spending allowance while the remainder of his earnings were invested then things might have turned out very differently.

Fifteen years after being paraded through the streets of Leamington as a national hero, he was being buried in the local cemetery, having committed suicide.

    It was a tragedy.

I have to go with the stronger man, Gene Fullmer, Randy Turpin though very awkward would make this contest very interesting. Not taking Turpin's great victory over Sugar Ray Robinson away from him but Robinson had just come back from the entertainment circuit, taking Randy for granted when they fought in London, England, where the referee was the sole vote back then. Both were kayoed by Ray, Turpin in 1951 and Fullmer in 1957. Gene was more of a brawler who could offset Turpin's style. Gene by TKO 10.

As hugely strong and tough as Fullmer certainly was, he was also crude and predictable. Randy was a terrific puncher to head and body so being hittable against him at his peak is a real handicap.
It might cost him a pair of sore hands but I've got Turpin by fairly wide decision.
