Headlining an MTK Global card October 29th. WBC International super welterweight title at stake, Kulakhmet's second defense. (I was very confused upon not being able to find my thread on Kulakhmet, btw, knowing with absolute certainty that it had been made and should exist ...with confusion giving way to anger that some mod or admin would have deleted it for some reason, before remembering that it was actually @CST80 that posted it on my behalf during my ban. ) Abreu on paper is a massive assignment for somebody's fifth pro bout, with the Dominican banger having fought a slew of recognizable names and fared pretty well (stopped just once, last time out at the hands of Jaron "Boots" Ennis and causing some difficulties in most of his other losses, ie dropping Jamal "Shango" James, opening cuts from punches on Egidijus "Mean Machine" Kavaliauskas and running both the Lithuanian and Pablo Cano close...and scoring 21 knockouts in his 23 victories) and yet this strangely feels like a hitch in the young Kazakh southpaw's progress. Almost too easy, despite the very real danger presented by the Caribbean moreno's power. The only question, barring something crazy happening, is whether he can match Ennis' result or settle for a shutout. At the very least it'll serve to introduce the Kyzylorda native and former amateur stud to more fans in Great Britain (and to a lesser extent internationally, although not many casuals are apt to tune into a random MTK card on Youtube on a Friday).
Archibald Sharp vs. Alexis Boureima Kabore in the co-main event. Not all that big a step up for the "Sharpshooter", but the Burkinabé fighter "Yoyo" Kaboure does have some recognizable-name continental victories over Nicodemus Otieno and Prosper Ankrah (of Kenyan and Ghanaian stock respectively), plus the Filipino sometimes upset artist Silvester López ...and went the distance with Rey Vargas, so not a total scrub. Between that and Kulakhmet vs. Abreu this card makes for a nice and welcome, if not exactly tantalizing, diversion for a Friday afternoon/evening. (particularly since beggars can't be choosers and some weekends lately have been pretty lean, with the notorious boxing "down season" just around the corner)
Boots And Merengue was actually my third favourite funk group, after Fat Larry's Band and Zapp And Roger. I gotta be real though, player. I was always a bigger fan of Roger than Zapp and it's the same way as me and Boots over Merengue. You'd think it'd be the one with the more colourful name but it ain't. I'm substance over flash, that's all I'm claimin'.
