Heard a channel ONE exec quoted as saying they are happy with how things are progressing so far. But haven't heard any actual viewer numbers. ...so long as they keep televising it!
For whatever the final ratings numbers are, SuperBoxer has been in my opinion a success and most importantly about future positioning. As Ashley quite well notes, both 'Footy Shows' in Sydney and Melbourne would rate quite high, however if you look at it, these are the potential audiences that a.) can switch in the short term, being both 'footy' and boxing fans, b.) especially over the summer months, switch to SuperBoxer as it won't be clashing with these respective shows and c.) the 'soft / transient' audience that hear about particular boxers or watch/catch footage and subsequently become a fan. Bigger fights will enhance the product and also come with development and further advertising revenues and one thing we can keep in the back of our minds is that HD doesn't fully switch over until mid-2010, hence currently, they would only be touching on between 30%-50% of the total Australian TV landscape. Once people purchase set-top boxes or HD enabled TV's prior to mid-2010, this figure has the ability to increase dramatically and rapidly. The overriding thing for me is that it's another night's viewing pleasure of 'The Sweet Science', further to what we currently have.
All good and agree....I just have a bee in my bonett about the time slot TEN has boxing in....Wednesday night would have been better....lots of people watching the footy show would watch boxing.
Agreed Contendo. It's never going to out-rate the footy show (of either code), and ONE would never have had that expectation. Not sure what ONE pay for most of their sports shows? Perhaps some of them very little, as afterall, some of it is only trashy filler. Povided they aren't paying excessively for the boxing, it rates reasonably well and doesn't self-destruct through stupidity, it's hard to see them not perservering with it...........we hope!
You make a very good point there Ashley and something worthy of consideration by the TV 'powers that be'. Over the 'footy' months as you you say, moved to a Wednesday slot would allow it to not clash with either show and if successful, leave over the summer months as is, so to build consistency in people's thought process. There's a lot of good coming out of people talking about the show/watching the show and discussing it's future and is a burden the TV networks would rather have! Some of those trashy American so-called comedies come and go in the blink of an eye on some networks, so a well put together sports show such as SuperBoxer builds and people recognise that. One thing to note, in some 4-6 weeks worth of exposure and telecast by the time next weeks show is over, 'SuperBoxer' has definitely built an immediate awareness and brand which only helps for the future.
You can't compare the footy shows with any shows on 1HD as channel 9 is available in every house whereas 1HD is available in very few. Considering it is up against solid brands like the footy shows, and the fact that its not available in most houses, I think 100,000 for the first show is pretty good. It's not as though there has been good boxing on free-to-air or payTV very often so we are really introducing a whole new concept. Hope it continues to grow.
I agree with most people, over 100 000 is pretty good, the time is not that good, wednesday and a little earlier would be alot better, all in all pretty good. I hope they do a little more shows, say 2 month would be good to see.
I hope we get more fighters keen to test themselves. I know Linc has had no trouble finding people wanting to fight on the show, but many fewer that want to take on a good challenge. Dom Vea would have to be the biggest winner out of the whole concept so far. Very few people outside of boxing knew who he was but with one fight he's increased his fan base ten-fold.
People make a good point, the time slot is crucial............ Imagine Bob and Hoppa coming on prime time at 8.30 before the footy shows
