(in his defense, after going down he did get drilled in his temple by another left hand; after which point saying "the hell with it" and riding the count in hostile turf where your chances of winning fairly or elsewise already were slim to begin with can seem understandable...but I'm still pretty skeptical of the knockdown itself. Just a grazing shot that looked as weak as the rest of what Nowicki had been tossing at him...)

Round 1

Szymański has the left jab on tap and flowing liberally, but Welter is timing him with a couple of his own. Volume and forward motion by Szymański, and patient accurate countering by Welter. Nice short uppercut by Welter. Szymański missing jabs past the head and trying a sudden downturn in trajectory, firing a 1-2 at the stomach but getting blocked as Welter clocks him and drops his gloves to cover. Nice short left hook by Welter. Flurry on the guard by Szymański. Welter throws a couple of jab feints high and low, then lays a couple of body shots on Szymański leaning in on him. Scooping underhanded right on the body from Szymański himself now. Welter buzzes Szymański's hairline with a few jabs.

Most interesting, competitive and skillful bout of the gala yet.

Not sure why this isn't the main event; Łaszczyk is most likely going to devour his Tanzanian opponent.

 

Round 2

Szymański falls in and forces exchanges at point blank, getting off with more shots per sequence with his faster hands. They swap light uppercuts and cuffing hooks in the pocket, Szymański getting in the higher repetition and then backing away until Welter jabs him into a corner. Lots of ducking ambush flurries and single push-jabs while moving laterally by Szymański.

Somebody at ringside brought a very annoying noise-making device, sounds like a rattlesnake. (or rather, more like a baby toy full of tiny plastic balls)

They're having at it with a will, very distracting.

 

Oof, that's pretty emasculating...

This is taking place in Konin, which is Szymański's hometown, but Welter - from 276km away in Legnica - is the one for whom the crowd is audibly chanting.

 

Szymański shades the third with nonstop sidestepping and a busy jab.

Welter fixes Szymański on the ropes and gives his midsection a drubbing, but is then staggered by a fadeaway counter hook as Szymański escapes. Welter applying heavy pressure and continuously forcing Szymański to retreat until his back hits a solid object, at which point Szymański must tie up or get tenderized above the waist and fed stiff jabs that jack his open jaw around.

Welter keeping himself in Szymański's chest, not letting up, even as the left jab of Szymański saws against the side of his neck. Welter moves his head on the way in to slip what he can while chasing Szymański with his own jab and looking to bowl in body shots. Szymański occasionally steps off and gets a little overly confident in his defensive reflexes by lowering his arms for a rest, only to get smacked by a quick left hand on the mandible.
