One of the most disgraceful performances by a reigning HW champion along with Klitschko vs Fury.
Holyfield did his job well and cant be blamed for douglas' unwillingness to fight to defend his title.

Looking at that Douglas didn't look or fight that badly in that fight up to the knockout though he obviously was carrying more weight and had less motivation than he had against Tyson. He did look like he was making an effort but was caught by a great counter by Holyfield after which he did seem to give up.

His lack of effort and ability in the fight has been exaggerated.

    - I think it's very clear he didn't approach training with the same desire as he had before Tyson.

    - I think he very possibly didn't show a champion's heart when he hit the floor too (although it's all too easy for people who didn't get hit by that punch to say "he should have got up ! he quit!").

    - But the fact is he was using his boxing skills the best he could but was being outboxed by a primed Holyfield whose style he would never have been able to excel against.

    - And .... he got hit a very good punch. He walked right into it. He tried the uppercut that he'd had so much success with against Tyson, but Holyfield had been practicing that counter with Benton and Duva in training camp. They knew Douglas liked that long-range uppercut and left himself open with it.

Douglas didn't put on a great effort but I never thought it was "disgraceful" like others have said.
I suspect a lot of people lost money on him. LOL !

Oh yeah, Douglas took the fight soooooo seriously that he ordered Pizza on the day of the fight. Douglas was a one hit wonder who caught Tyson at the right time with extra motivation from all kind of Family issues while Tyson idea of training for title defenses was ****ing countless Bimbos............Douglas, his team/mgmt, Tyson and most "in the know" Boxing insiders knew that lightning would never strike twice with Buster, ever, except Steve Wynn, he got conned out of 30 mil for this farce.........Buster was never ever to be seen again, or ranked, until he wanted to run the con again a decade later, quit against a Bodybuilder and was waxed literally right after the opening bell by Savereasy......if Tyson would have gotten a immediate rematch it would have been over in one.

Buster Douglas showed he had talent, what he needed was discipline

Douglas there makes most current HW's look like Butterbean, the difference is that he was in the ring with a superior boxer than Tyson.

Despite Buster's tremendous performance against Tyson, I really didn't consider this much of an upset and wasn't surprised by the result.

Why is ordering a pizza the day of the fight in any way inconsistent with taking the fight seriously?

Plenty of energy in a pizza, perfect food before a scrap.

But didn't you guys know ? Pizza is the second worst thing that can happen to a boxer before a big fight.
The worst, of course, is sex with Japanese ladies.

The BEST thing that can happen to a boxer is having his mother die.

This is all self evidently true. And if you doubt a word of it you're a "HATER !! "

Pizza, pasta, any type of food with alot of carbs(but without too much spices that can upset the stomach) is just fine before a fight, given you have a few hours to digest it. The disgraceful part was that he just decided not to get up. He wasnt some old shot warrior who had been through brutal fights and didnt want any more, nor was he some journeyman. At that point he was the HW champion of the world and when he decided not to get up he disrespected the championship and all the brave fighters that fought and bled to defend it. I dont remember any reigning lineal HW champ(especially in his prime) just giving up like that other than Wlad who didnt lie down but still refused to let his hands go when defending his title against Fury who had not hurt or dropped him

Even Archie Moore kept getting up against Ali in 1962. At that point, Moore was an old shot warrior and a title wasn't even on the line. About 20 years older than Douglas was vs Holyfield and plenty of hard fights
