One on one, at the height of their abilities and powers, I'm convinced that Gomez would have ko'ed Olivares. Gomez lost more of his power when he went up in weight..but against Juan LaPorte, who was at the time of his fight with Gomez a title holder and at the peak of his abilities, was effortlessly outboxed by Gomez, who showed that he had another facet to his game. The reports of the fight say that Gomez was like a "puppetmaster" in that he was able to outsmart Juan all the way to a 12 round decision. It seemed that Gomez was able to feint and manoevre LaPorte into position to do anything he wanted to, except knock out or knock down his iron chinned opponent. In fact, Gomez sensed the futility of trying to do that, and settled down to put on a masterful boxing exhibition somewhat like Marco Antonio Barrera would put on against Prince Named years later...he was that good. Olivares was a great fighter as a bantamweight, and showed against Castillo that he could box as well as punch, but he was also somewhat vulnerable chinwise and I think Gomez would have exploited that as viciously as he did against Carlos Zarate in '78. Gomez, in his peak years in the mid 70's till he screwed up ion fighting Sanchez was a frightenly good, complete fighter who seemed to really enjoy his work as he decimated one hapless victim after another. Against Zarate, he was cat-quick and clever in boxing defensively at times until he suddenly decided to cut loose on the deadly Zarate, and made him look like a helpless prelim fighter before the fight was stopped.

One of the ebst highlight reels ever just to admire absolutely great boxing, boxing on another level, that is like a Sugar Ray Robinson highlight reel that.

By the way i just watched Sanchez-Nelson again, tremendous performance regardless of the age of Sanchez' opponents, the potential echievements of that man is beyond my thiniking ability.

Yes it is..Gomez has always dazzled the **** out of me. I pity the guy's opponents back then...he would go to the head..to the body...relentlessly and they just couldn't deal with him. Remember how he treated Zarate..who was considered and still is as one of the greatest bantam champs ever...just killing everybody...and he steps up just a half step to junior feather and is treated like a sock puppet by Gomez..it was outrageous.

I love that highlight reel, really brings home what a fighter gomez was. He could box from the outside, could fight on the inside, had massive power, brilliant movement and balance, good chin and a deadly finisher.

Also pre sanchez he has a calm presence in the ring IMO, he knew he would get to his opponents and took his time but when he had you in trouble he didn't let you off.

At his best at 122 there has been few more talented fighters ever

Exactly...I left that out about Gomez' calm demeanor..he went about his destruction in a detached sort of manner..like somebody wrote in a great article about Gomez "like a space alien" coming after the poor guys that he fought. What power the guy had..and that would have been enough, but he was cunning as well. A total fighter.
