rex layne is a funny one...walcott got a shot at the title after layne beat him...and after he lost his fight in that shot...he got another shot !!.....layne won something like 8 fights in a row after after beating walcott...and no shot came. anyway....the boxer rocky really ruined...or who i expected when i seen this thread title was carmine vingo...nearly killed vingo, i have a friend, still alive today who i visted earlier this year, who was there watching that fight live....best of my knowledge vingo recovered and lived to be a very old man only passing a few years ago
Seems like I read somewhere that 13 or 14 men never fought again after bouts with the rock. He took a toll.
Dempsey his self thought Rocky was the hardest puncher ever and said so when discussingvthe Rocks power vis-à-vis his own.
I don't think I've ever seen a fighter Rock's size with such heavy hands. Even if there was, the blend of conditioning and grit Rock blends with it adds up a total package I've never seen since. Watching explosive knockout artist highlights are typically pretty exciting. Exceptional technique, timing, and speed blend seamlessly for that split second of perfect action. That the opponent on the other end is usually fine after a bit makes it easier not to feel too guilty about the whole thing. Marciano highlights & fights aren't like that. They're sadistic. They're brutal. The film is 65 years old, and that just adds to it. It's rough. It's grainy. But every. Single. Shot. looks like it's taking something real out of the guy across from him. It's not very aesthetically pleasing. It's not rewarding to see his opponent's career shortening punch by bludgeoning punch. Those reels aren't what you show a kid to persuade them that boxing's the "sweet science"; they're what you show the kid when you want to convince him that boxing isn't a wise career option if he's remotely good at anything else.
That's a lie. If your talking about his best opponents They were all still winning big fights. "Going down hill on fumes" gives the impression these guys had stopped winning fights at top level. This was not the case. Was Ali going down hill "on fumes" when Foreman took him on? No, Ali was winning big fights. And so were Charles, Moore, Walcott and even old man Louis. Louis was further from his prime but still recording legit wins worthy of a #1 contender that he was. without Rocky, Moore and Walcott would have been dominant champions. CharLes would have regained the title. Louis might not have been champion again but he would have been a respectable challenger for most.
