Nigel Benn's first defence of his WBO middleweight title was against Iran Barkley. The fight didn't quite last a round, yet there was more action while it lasted than in some world title bouts that went the distance. Loved Benn, though 'IF' Barkley could have road out a few rounds, he looked the more controlled fighter and he probably would have turned the tide.
Hi Buddy. For reasons I can't articulate, I feel the same, always have, no doubting the stoppage and Benn deserved the win for sure, but part of me has always felt had Barkley survived the round, he would have been too big and too strong for Benn over the course, with no justification whatsoever, strange ! Stay safe thistle, like your posts and your manners.
Benn was also lucky not to get DQ'ed he hit Barkley when he was on the floor numerous times, had Barkley made more of a meal of it like Santana did vs Norris or Griffin did vs Jones it easily could've been a DQ. But we all know Barkley is a warrior and wouldn't want to win a fight in such circumstances. But overall i agree the 3 knockdown rule ruined what IMO could've been an absolute classic, just imagine if fights like Marquez/Pacquiao 1 had the 3 knockdown rule we would've never witnessed their great series of fights.
Very interesting fight, thanks. IMO stopping the fight was the right decision. Barkley looked dazed and like he was going to be dropped again. I doubt he would have lasted enough to turn the tide. I didn't remember Barkley had such a poor defense. Benn's hooks were kryptonite. However, TBH Benn should be DQ. Very nice win anyway.
