The first questions is... Do we as fans hold boxers, not just boxers but all athletes on standards that are too high? ex: recently ive read some threads about andre berto and some people have said that he isnt going to be that good because he got knocked down before.... some of the greatest fighters of all time have been knocked down and even knocked out and have still went on to complete amazing careers.... miguel cotto has been knocked down & staggered badly and he is one of the most dangerous fighters in boxing. The 2nd question is... Do fighters who are too good suffer from due to their abilities in the eyes of fans? ex. Alot of people critize mayweather for never being in a fight that hes had to "dig deep" in and say his chin is suspect because we have never really seen him in true danger? isnt that a good thing? isnt the purpose of fighting to totally outclass your opponent which is something that mayweather has more or less done in every fight? NOT JUST SPEAKING ABOUT MAYWEATHER but he is the first example that came to my mind... there are other fighters who have suffered being too good and suffering for it. someone else who comes immediately to my mind is mike tyson.. overall he has 5 L's (i think) on his record.. people look at this and call him over rated and other things when truthfully he is one of the best heavyweights ever and you cannot take that away from him. Anyways ill be waiting for your answers THANKS :hi:
I believe you learn more from being knocked down, than from breezing through your opponents. As far as mayweather is concerned. He was good no doubt, but I am hesitant to say he was too good because he never faced a top level welterweight. No Cotto, No Margarito, No williams, No Mosley. Defend the belts, don't hold them hostage. Mike Tyson had the great equalizer in one punch power. He was never really in deep until Buster Douglas. Every fighter has a counterpart that is their B side that they need to beat to prove themselves. I don't believe Mayweather or Tyson has ever done that.
