Bernard Hopkins UD12 Joe Calzaghe Edison Miranda (T)KO Mikkel Kessler If the results of the two fights above were to manifest themselves in the ring, this would prove a couple of things. Firstly, there would be legitimate claim for Joe Calzaghe's career to a complete joke. Secondly, the Americans would have ruled at 168 if they had wanted to step up earlier. But instead of fighting eurobums, they chose to fight each other knowing that they were the only true elite fighters is genuine historical weight categories. Miranda sparking out Kessler would prove that Pavlik, Taylor & Hopkins would dominate at SMW. I am right, right?
I think it's pointless trying to make Calzaghe's career look better than it was or trying to pretend that a loss would make his performances meaningless. Whatever he's achieved in his career, he has shown he can perform at the highest level, and that he is one of the best in the world. That is evident. However, if Hopkins beat him, despite the fact that Hopkins' style is precisely the wrong style for Calzaghe, AND if Calzaghe hadn't shown a marked fall in performance compared to the Kessler fight (slower, worse reflexes, poorer stamina, etc), than, given that Bhops is 43 and very faded, yeah...it woul prove that Calzaghe was overrated and that Hopkins was underrated. It would aslo support the view that the Americans could have dominated 168 if they had wanted to. If Miranda sparks Kessler AND if Kessler doesn't show a marked fall in performance compared to the Calzaghe fight, then yeah...it would support the view that both him and Calzaghe were overrated. But it wouldn't PROVE anything...you can only prove something by winning in the ring.
Hopkins could not possibly be p4p No.1 if he beats Calzaghe, unless a miracle happens and Bhop turns back time. He can beat Calzaghe if Calzaghe isn't considerably faster and fitter than him...but in that case, it means both have declined and that both would be outside the Top 10. (e.g. Hopkins at 10 and Calzaghe at 11.)
:huh Whom am I dickriding? Calzaghe? How? By not overrating his future opponent? Think about it! Or am I really setting up Calzaghe for a big fall, hoping Hopkins does him?:nut In that case why would I say Hopkins would not make p4p Top 3 by beating Calzaghe? No, mate, I'm not dick-riding anyone! Sure, I have a laugh from time to time, but when I'm obviously being serious, like now, I call it as I see it, whether it's Hopkins, Kessler, Calzaghe, Bute, JMM, Pacquiao or anyone else...
If Hopkins beats Calzaghe then he is making a pretty strong argument for being P4P no.1 y'know, his last two wins are more impressive than Hatton and De La Hoya, and he's 43 with a terrific legacy already in place.
Not really. Joe losing doesn't mean the Americans would have ruled. They, whoever they are, still need to fight as well. And Miranda winning only proves he can beat Kessler. Pavlik, Taylor, and Hopkins don't automatically get W's over everyone @ 168 else based on a couple OTHER fighters losses. Terrible logic you used.
It would make the Super Middleweight division look horrible: -Their ATG Champion being defeated by a past his prime 43 year old Hopkins. -Their #1 contender being beat by a contender that was average at 160.
Well........ Sorry to burst your bubble, but Edison Miranda would be schooled by Kessler anyway. I can see Hopkins beating Calzaghe, and vice versa, and therefore am looking forward to this one.
