Galento was ranked number 1. Don't let is colorful personality fool you into underestimating him. 80 guys already did that.
Galento looks like **** on film but don't be fooled That guy wandering the ring with his left ****ed low kinda knew what he was doing. He was a 6-time New Jersey lightheavyweight champ as an amateur so he wasn't entirely a bum brought off the streets. Basically, he bargained that his reflexes, his chin and his left hook (among other less legal blows) would make him money. And he was wildly successful on this formula. Sometimes, simple works really well... Lou Nova, Al Ettore, Nathan Mann.. He beat some good fighters and he lost to some not-so-good fighters. But give him his due respect.
i'm not saying galento was in great shape but the film shows pretty clearly that bean is in horrible shape for a person, let alone an athlete, and that baer and even galento were far superior to him in this. i get talking about film is a skills thing, but the film also shows a tub of lard gassing quickly and badly, you can't see one without the other.
I think the fact that Baer could and did, indicates he is clearly several classes above Esch,. We measure fighters abilities by whom they manage to beat. Baer beat these and other world class men,Esch beat no one. So I think it is relevant.
I'm not ranking them, or virtually putting the Butterbean in that era. This is Galento vs Esch and the only way it can end is one knocking out the other, I see no other result. I think Butterbean hit harder and had faster hands, so I pick him to win. Asking how he'd do vs other fighters is irrelevant.
Let us agree to differ. You've never agreed with me in the past so it should not be difficult for you.:good
I dont wish to be disrespectful, but this is one of the most absurd predictions that I have ever read on this forum, and I would not have expected that from you.
I don't know what's absurd about it, in particular when we are talking about heavyweights, where one punch desided bouts in favor of supposedly weaker boxer (and who could lose every round by huge margin before landing that one punch) hundreds or thousands of times. It's absurd to consider such prediction absurd.
Senya are you saying that Butterbean was the better fighter cos you think he hit harder and had faster hands. Who did Bean at any stage of his career or drop that was in the same league as any of the names Galento fought? I have seen da Bean, train in a gym where amateurs were actually laughing at what he was doing. Guess what he never showed up to that gym again. After that his trainer Murray Sutherland trained him in his hotel room. Galento fought decent white and black fighters of the time. Lorenzo Pack would've flattened Bean in a hurry, worse then what Rose did. Galento was good at setting up that hook, that alone gives Galento the edge and nevermind the experience of fighting guys superior to what the Bean fought. Galento in this case was the real deal, Bean was protected, and Galento wasn't.
You cant simply overlook the gulf in class here. When one guy is beating guys with losing records, and the other is beating ranked contenders, it is manifestly absurd to favour the former based on a theoretical stylistic argument. You are not even comparing like for like when you watch them fighting.
What gulf in class? Just because Galento somehow climbed up the rankings in an extremely weak era, doesn't make him classy. Take a look at what was written the day of Louis-Galento fight by one local newspaper: https://www.newspapers.com/image/52622145/
