There are very few fighters on the planet who can beat ranked contenders, in any era.

Fighters, who can beat Butterbeans opposition, are twenty a penny in any era.

It doesn’t matter what the newspapers said about him, because he proved them wrong in the ring!

 

I think the version of Galento that was in the movie ,"On The Waterfront ",probably beats Butter Bean.

 

Whatever. I see no point continuing to debate this silliness. A gulf in class... I'll advise you to actually read next-day reports for the fights leading up to Galento meeting Louis, written by people who were there and knew a thing or two about him and the heavyweight situation in general. Writers freely predicted Louis could beat both Galento and Baer in the same ring the same night (that was before Baer lost to Nova).

 

But you did say this, "I think Butterbean hit harder and had faster hands", that's all subjective. Fact is Galento's style might not have been your cup of tea, but the truth he fought far better opposition than did Bean. He did good with what he had. Bean was just a fatguy who usually had close to a 100pds on his handpicked opposition. Galento was solid fatguy, if that makes sense, bean was mostly flab.

He tried to train him, and found him to be an undisciplined idiot, and then walked out in anger.

Obviously if you were Jack Dempsey back then, you did not train just anybody!

 

You are also from that group of people who pretend they somehow possess more knowledge about old times than contemporary (for those times) boxing writers, even though you were not there and you didn't really read much of what was written at the time?

"a shot bean". Holmes was freaking 53 and still won. So in reality a 35 year old morbidly huge man knocked down a 53 year old actually shot boxer, then the 35 year old proceeded to LOSE to the 53 year old. Knocking down a Prime Joe Louis is infinitely more impressive than knocking down and losing to an ancient shell of a boxer.

 

Never underestimate Butterbean. He was a power to be reckoned with.
