I would take Marciano's opposition over Holmes’s in a heartbeat. Holmes has got it locked down on longevity and volume, but his best title challengers are far from impressive. It was not the strongest era, and lot of them were not the best or brightest of the era.
I agree. He had the chin and punching power to get away with certain things that other fighters didn't. Two of his toughest fights, Charles and Moore, were against top p4p fighters OF ALL TIME. Of course Marciano is going to look bad. He didn't have a pretty style and those guys were ring geniuses. Smh idk why people fail to see that.
Of course you would just look at all those slick boxers and huge punchers comparedto Spinks , Cooney , Witherspoon etc. lol
Marciano knew his boxing and his limitations . He self admits having to work harder because of them. We are not comparing how he looked but how he would look with guys that were better fighters.
Those are the names i need anyone beats Marciano himself ,imagine what 6'6 C00Ney would do in his era . Go watch some of his late 70's /early 80's fights than envision him fighting older Louis or Archie Moore who knocked down Marciano .
Cooney never beat a single opponent ranked in the top ten in his entire career. Not one. He was an acceptable choice of title challenger, but there is no reason to think that he was one of the better contenders of the era, or that he would be any sort of standout in another era. Witherspoon is one of the better contenders in the history of the division in my opinion, but he wasn't when Holmes beat him, and it is even debatable whether Holmes deserved the decision. Spinks was one of the greatest light heavyweights of all time, but his credentials at heavyweight hang entirely on beating Holmes, and it is hard to give Holmes too much credit for a series where he lost both fights. I see no reason to think that any of these challengers are better than what Marciano brings to the table.
C00ney would be the champion in 1950,he would defeat Marciano/Patterson and even liston who has only two wins with guys over 225 and neither were punchers. The answer is yes I would take C00ney and the guys like Norton and lyle of 1979 he knocked out over anyone Rocky fought as any logical person would. Spinks weighed more than Marciano see this is called the twisting game it doesn't work here when stating Spinks is unproven only at LHW. Holmes also beat Spinks rather clearly the 2nd time and Witherspoon who did nothing to suggest he won but claim it.
My unsolicited, unbiased opinion on this one is that you are the one who brought it up. Just like in times gone by if you read something strange in the newspaper or overheard an odd conversation it is not strange to to discuss it with someone. I think perhaps you get into a stranger area if you have some sort of personal guideline in which you don't discuss interactions that you have in this of the world known as the Internet. The story about the girl from the TV was a bit odd unless you were also good friends with the woman. Granted you should go in your TV back but I don't think that would justify ratting on someone who trusted you with a confidence. For what it's worth and granted I don't know you at all but I think you are better than that. Perhaps a that story as an example of something you did when your younger and more rash.
That would be a massive leap of faith when Cooney never beat a ranked opponent in his entire career. At best this prediction is highly speculative, and at worst it is downright implausible. Reliance on opponents like this is a major weakness in Holmes’s case, not strength.
Marcianos era was was likely weakened by the attrition of top talent following World War II. Holmes era suffered due to the blight caused by cocaine and the loss of top talent to the rising popularity of other sports. I think there is a better argument for Marciano that he faced the best contenders available. Head-to-head I give the nod to Holmes based on the increased speed and size of the newer generation.
Its not faith its called intelligent break down of match ups. Marciano actually has a better chance at holmes than C00ney because of the power and height of C00ney make it a more difficult fight for him. With Holmes like C00ney he could land a body shot maybe and get a chance to win,the reasons why it would most likely not happen has been stated several times here.
How about bragging about it on the internet? How does that sit with you? God knows we have all done things we aren't exactly proud of, but that leaves a decidedly bad taste in the mouth. Still as he said at the time, and I quote. "There are no rules".Obviously ,as it applies to him there aren't!
