Most fighters who rise in weight successfully are tall for their weight class and powerfully built upper body. Guys like Manny Pacquiao who do it with narrow shoulders and short stature are rare.

Jorge Linares and Loma for example illustrate this. They both started at 126, but Linares has the body type to move up. Tall with powerful upper body. Other guys who had that look were Shane Mosley, FMJ, JMM, Hearns, Hopkins, etc.

RJJ, but at 5'11" wasnt a tall MW, but dude had a ridiculous pair of shoulders. Errol Spence same kind of thing. Not a tall WW, but powerfully built.

People always want to say that Rigo is small for 122. But he has an exceptionally powerful looking build for a SBW. Much more powerful looking than Pac, Morales, Barrera, Loma, Hamed, Santa Cruz, etc.

Good post. I wish more posters would realize moving up is not as simple as packing a few more pounds. So many factors come in to play.

These idiots here just say he needs to move up. Well that's easier said than done. If you don't have the frame to move up you wont be able to do it as successfully.

Moving up in weight class is as simple as eating more food. Why? Because more food equals more weight.

Bellew is bird chested, no visible V-taper, no broad shoulders and has been way better since stepping up to CW.

Rigs does seem to have a wide set of shoulders, but that could be highlighted by his slender torso. Some boxers have bad posture/slumped shoulders, which makes them seem narrower.

I think your observation is right on the money. Loma, by comparison, has narrow shoulders. Hell, his head is almost half as wide as his shoulders. That is why he should go no further than 135 and really stay at 130 and only come up to 135 for a big money fight, like Garcia. Loma is a true 130 pounder.

Perhaps, but he is powerfully built. He's 5'3" so there is a reason he fights at SBW and not 105 or 108. He's got a powerful build.

You mean they have big frames.

PAC has a big frame for his height, by the way.

Not really. Have him stand side by side next to Marquez. And there is about 2 inches in height difference and Marquez has the bigger, broader back and shoulders.

There is also the thickness of the bones themselves. Pacquiao has 8 inch wrists, bigger than most heavyweights. Read this:

Compare the legs between Pac and JMM. Manny definitely has him there.
