Here is the fight: [It is not completely uploaded yet, but I am going to bed now and let the computer upload it; so wait maybe an hour to watch it when the video is processed] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dib2JMBGWm0&feature=youtu.be
Thanks again Baclava...that was very kind of you. Tyrell didnt seem in great shape..blowing hard after one round...very small ring was in Masons favour...ironically Tyrell had seemed to get in a winning podition just before the knockdown....i dont think there is any doubts that they were genuine punches...exactly the same punch combination took him out when he fought Larry Donald much later in his career....truth is Tyrell wasnt powerful enough at the highest level. Fight also showed Masons limitations..i always remember thinking he was better than Frank Bruno but looking at that i dont know...Mason was solid but slow. Great shame he died ..Age 47-48 i think seemed a decent bloke. Biggs got in shape after this winning a few fights until fighting Bowe...where he gave a good showing. The Biggs that fought Bowe would have been too quick for Mason. Thanks again...
You are right, when I looked at the finish there was no noise. But watching the bout, it actually happened in the last minute of the fifth after Biggs was thrown to the canvas, from 20:40 ish. Apologies 20 odd years of booze has dulled the memory!
Fair enough...the memory does play tricks with the passing of time. what kind of money would Biggs have got paid for a fight like this ? i know he got 1.2 million dollars before all deductions for his fight with Tyson.
I must have watched so many poor heavyweight fights since mason v Biggs that it now looks a much better fight than I remember watching all those years ago. Quite a draining war. Big men. Good win for mason. Biggs was not knocked out he quit because as he felt his own second wind fade away he felt mason come onto his own second wind. There was a bit more in masons tank, but not much.
No where near $1.2 Million! If he got expenses and £50,000 I would of been surprised. I suspect he took the fight partly as a holiday to the UK.
choklab..glad u enjoyed this fight...watch Tyrell v Bowe..i reckon it was his best effort..was in good shape..but it also showed his limitations...if you watch it would be interested in your opinion...Biggs couldve had a padded record if he fought nobodys like for example Tony Tucker did from same era...Tyrell could hardly have faced tougher guys in short space of time...was it for money..? Thats why i wondered how much he would have made for fights against Mason Damiani Bowe Lewis etc..anyway hope u watch him v Bowe.
meant to add...when Biggs looks back on his career this must be a fight that he feels he should have won..he wouldve surely outboxed outmoved Mason..but didnt seem fit enough to sustain the effort...to lose through lack of fitness is surely a massive own goal ?
£50,000 in the late 1980s was a lot of cash. Two dollars to the pound back then. Think what property prices were back then! After expenses and tax Tyrell would easy clear twice an average yearly wage from that one fight.
I think you are getting a bit carried away with the exchange rate there. Back in the mid 80s we almost got to £1/$1 parity. Although Sterling rebounded a bit by the late 80s, it was at best like today (around $1.50 to the £1). And the £50,000 was a best case scenario. If Biggs took home £20,000 after tax, I reckon he would of done well.
i think you both make valid points...think what choklab is saying is its still a good payday..20 grand back then would be 70 grand now...i suspect these guys went through money like water...Someone once said 'if you can blow a million you can blow ten million' its all relative... did u get a look at Biggs v bowe ?
Yes, it was a great effort. Biggs was much better against Bowe he nearly knocked Riddick out in round 3. Bowe just ground him down. It is a lot of work staying on the outside and it was good pressure from bowe that paid off. Tyrell needed more space and with a bigger edge in reach it could have paid off for him. Trouble was Riddick could always reach him because both men were identical. Riddick was not hard to hit but at only 225 bowe had an excelent pace. It is as much effort staying away as it is pressing forward. Tyrell was unlucky to get such an in shape bowe to be honest. Have you seen Biggs v damiani? Tyrell was very good there too. In the late 1980s before the property boom you could buy an average family home for £35,000. Same house would cost £175,000 today.
choklab..glad u appreciated the Tyrell v Riddick contest..when u see alot of poor contests over the years you really look back and appreciate how good these guys were. Glad you thought Biggs put up a good effort...i think he gets a bad press for some reason reason..all that gets mentioned is his early drug habit and underachievement,he certainly didnt look like a man who was doing the wrong things outside the ring v Bowe..i just can't figure out why he took so many tough fights on the bounce almost. you mention the Damiani fight his first after tyson almost a year break as he had plastic surgery on his cut so had to have time to heal,Damiani was his last fight with Duva and for me it was a crazy one to take,Tyrell got another bad cut and it was stoped,Tyrell reckons he would have outboxed damiani but the fight looked close and Damiani looked strong but it was a stupid fight to take, again was it for the money? to get his career on track he shouldve had 2 or 3 easier fights.interesting what you say about being harder to fight on the outside Tyrell always started his fights dancing and landing jabs but it never lasted long, so maybe he wasnt fit enough to fight his best style...does that make sense ??
