    Round 9

Spong is jabbing insistently, headhunting, getting slipped or blocked, uncaring, the jabs merely window-dressing until he is close enough for his true objective: leaping in off his toes with a big swiveling left hook, which each time is either ducked or rolled with so that it only grazes. Perea is shimmying along the ropes, showboating, at one point gazing off into the middle distance in the crowd with his face turned 90 degrees away from Spong, disrespectfully, barely keeping one eye on him in his periphery with a contemptuous sneer. Hard but telegraphed jabs by Spong, pecking at the head of Perea, on which target he can't fixate his aim properly.

    10-9 Perea

    86-85 Perea

    Round 10

Spong is jabbing into the guard. Perea is just waiting, rolling his fists over each other, anticipating Spong's punches but neither deigning to be first, nor countering. Negativity from Perea here, spoiling until he is backed onto the ropes and pinned down, whereupon he throws a light uppercut flurry to free himself. Time out. Glove of Spong needs to be re-taped, apparently. Time in. Spong is finding a second wind, rather late. He shows off a bit more nimbleness than in the previous nine rounds as he advances upon Perea, then suddenly with a spring of his knees drops into a low squat to duck a combo. Spong is peppering the body with jabs on the way in, pinning his challenger down as the crowd reaches a fever pitch, hoping for a last-minute KO and willing him to action. Spong begins to land a looping right in succession and the ref inexplicably breaks up the action citing a foul of some kind, and the bell rings.

    10-9 Spong

    95-95

Commentators agree this was a tight, neck-and-neck affair. They believe the most damaging and effective blows were from Spong but credit Perea for giving him fits with his reflexive instincts and boxing IQ.

And still the unified WBO (second defense) and WBC (third defense) Latino heavyweight champion.

But it wasn't easy, his first time reaching the scorecards professionally in this sport (and indeed, his first time going more than four rounds and change...)

Perea was game AF. That match between him and Filip Hrgović, in hindsight, could have been VERY interesting. Maybe not all that fan-friendly, but a great match for purists.

I'd happily watch an exact redo of this card, (rematches of Angulo vs. González and Spong vs. Perea), to be honest - and next time I'd happily shell out the fifteen bucks instead of relying on some random guy's Facebook Live feed. :sisi1

Not surprised Spong had issues here. He was in with a guy who's much better than his record suggests and on top of that has a pretty good beard. Those 10 hard rounds are far more beneficial to him than another early KO would have been. Would like to see Spong get a push next year. Matchroom would probably be the best move. a lot of good fights would be available for him there and he he's only across the pond in the NL(He might live in Florida but wouldn't be hard for him to relocate there)

I thought the same thing would be a good signing for their Italian shows as has name recognition there from his kickboxing days. Him vs Takam would be a fun fight.

Has anybody else watched/scored it? (link above still works, free)

To me Spong was VERY lucky to escape with this one, if there was budge room in any of the close rounds it was probably in some that I gave him...

I thought he gave Ramirez some real issues especially with his awkward style and thudding power.

He may have been shut out on the cards but it wasn’t an easy fight at all.
