Been reading about him and by all accounts he could have been really great.Only lost one fight a challenge for Alfredo Escalara`s world super featherweight title.By all accounts it was a robbery and not long after he was murdered. So was he really that good and was he robbed in the one fight that mattered most?

J Russell Peltz has I think a whole chapter devoted to him (and scattered other references IIRC) in his book ‘30 Dollars and a Cut Eye,’ Peltz’s account of his decades of promoting.

    Worth a read.

I have written here that the Escalera-Everett decision was the single worst I have ever seen in the now 39 years I have been watching boxing. I still think so.

There is no way the judges weren't on the take. No one is that incompetent. They were bought, period.

One of the finest books I’ve ever read. I read it twice already and about 100 pages on the plane the other day. I visited Peltz at his office last week and he showed me around. It’s like a museum. He said the book is as rewarding as anything he ever did in boxing.

Got two or three books on the go at the moment that I’m equally keen to read and this is one of them. You’re putting me in a dilemma about which to read next!

Just checked not here in US either. Pretty boring fight anyway, I was actually there at the Spectrum for that one. We were not happy with the decision

Reading more on it shows that the referee scored the fight for Everett, the Puerto Rican judge, unsurprisingly went for Escalera. Now here`s the thing the deciding vote went to a chap from Philadelphia Everett`s home town and he gave it to Escalera. The wildly held opinion at the time was that he was paid off

Something was fishy there. The neutral judge gave it to Tyrone and the philadelphia judge was supposed to do the same. That's how it worked in those days, each hometown judge voted for his guy and the neutral judge decided it. But the philly judge said he hated runners and that is why he voted for Escalera. Rumor was he was just a prejudiced old white guy who hated blacks and that is why he voted against Tyrone. Don't know if that is true but it could be

The judge was Lou Tress and he was paid off by the mob:
