Good interview on this website featuring Tyrone Nurse who is fighting in a Brit title eliminator on Saturday vs Liam Taylor. (Free to stream on vipboxing) Ive enjoyed watching the British light-Welterweight scene during the past few years, Nurse has played his role in that. However, always felt his style needed adjusting, long and gangly yet enjoys fighting in phone box and never seems to carry power through his punches. Made for entertaining fights but you have to wonder could he make things easier on himself. He's also stepping up to Welterweight which should benefit him, amazing how he makes 10 stone with his size. The winner has the potential to face Jonny Garton for the British title. Be good to see these fight on BT sports!
I'm off down to watch this fight, I'm really looking forward to it. I was at a show this weekend which was promoted by tyrones father, Chris Aston. I was lucky enough to get to speak to Tyrone as he was .mulling about in the crowd. I asked him about the fight this Sat, his move up to ww and the UK ww scene. He was very friendly, you could tell he loved boxing and had a lot of knowledge both on world and british scenes, past and present. He's beat Taylor before and seems very confident going into this. He's changed trainers now and feels he's had enough time with his new trainer for the results to show. Good luck to both fighters on Sat night.
I was always a fan of Nurse and thought at one point he could really have pushed on to European level. He has great fundamentals but lacks that snap in his punches and I think he gasses too much and that is part of the reason why he stays inside for too long and ends up in a scrap. Maybe moving up in weight might help with that.
I like Nurse, too. I just feel that he lacked the discipline to stick to a game plan and not used his natural advantages to boss a fight. Too many times he’s been unable to resist getting into a scrap on the inside. The lad has massive nads and is an entertaining fighter but lacked the pop at that weight. I’m glad to hear he’s changed his coaching set up, I also think that perhaps he should have done what Selby has done and jump up two weight divisions instead of one. He’s pretty much fought at the same weight since he was 18 (10 years). I might be on my own in thinking this but there seems to be a real reluctance with British fighters to move up through the weights.
