Tyson did not have a SHORT prime. His prime was 85-96. Holyfield was the first to fight a nonprime Iron Mike.

That said, Tyson was pretty much heartless after Holyfield. He'd been exposed as a puncher only type fighter who could be easily discouraged with some patience and courage.

02 Tyson gets KTFO inside 6 by the current Wlad. 88 Tyson vs 03 Wlad ends like the Sanders fight.

Current Wlad vs 88 Tyson is a pickem.

P4P, 90% of us agree Wlad would be panic after Tyson's lands his fist big punch. Which result in a Corrie Sanders like ending for Wlad.

The 02 version of Tyson, was nothing more than some early fireworks and his legendary intimidating bravado that captivated many fight fans at the time. While my money would be on Wlad going in, I certainly wouldn't feel too confident about it. Wlad, unlike his brother. Can be intimidated and does not react well to pressure or aggressive fighters coming at him. Guys like Peter and Sanders seemed to floor him with ease, and we all can agree even the shot 02 version of Tyson was a better fighter than those guys.

I see it like most of you. If Wlad can get past the first 3 rounds, he will probably TKO Tyson late in the fight. I just wonder how Wlad will react to Tyson aggression and power in the first round?

This is exactly why I started this thread, to try and answer that specific question.

For me, it's not a slam dunk that Wlad wins, as is the case with most posters. If Lewis didn't have an upper cut to keep tyson away in their fight, who knows what would have happened. And one thing for certain, Tyson would be going straight at Wlad, who hates pressure. That said, I do agree that Tyson would have to hurt Wlad fairly early in the fight to have a chance of winning. But if he did, it would be very interesting, because we don't know how Wlad would react. Would he spend the rest of the fight trying to prevent Tyson from getting in close, and fighting scared, or would he get aggressive at some point and his jab and right hand to try and hurt Tyson and keep him out of range.

So the question is, if Tyson did manage to hurt Wlad in the first 2-3 rounds, how would Wlad react?

Wlad would react as he always has in the past. Clinching on for dear life and hitting the canvas several times. Though, unlike Peter. Tyson, even at that time. Had enough in the tank to finish his opponent off if he seen him hurt. Tyson probably had the greatest killer instinct for a heavyweight in the ring since Dempsey.

I said it before, and I will say it again. Wlad is one of the most physically gifted heavyweights I have ever seen, and extremely powerful when he decides to let his hands go. Though his mental toughness is very flawed. Wlad can be intimidated, and seems to always come apart at the seams when things get tough. His brother Vitali is not nearly as gifted as Wlad, but anytime theirs a poll debating on who would win between the two. The majority always picks Vitali. Thats because Wlad looks so weak in the ring at times, especially when he panics.

Wlad would probably beat this version of Tyson, but if Iron Mike finds Wlad's achilles heal. I truly believe Tyson would finish him. Tyson was still a very good finisher and did have the power take out his opponents.

If Wlad doesn't **** his pants, Tyson has no chance of getting inside.

Buster Douglas was alot better than Purrity and a better boxer than Sanders. He's even with Brewster I guess. Who did Purrity or Sanders beat other than Wlad? Sanders is so overrated, the guy lost to Nate Tubbs and Rahman. For a guy whose supposed to be so powerful, couldn't even knockout a weak chinned fighter in Rahman when he had him hurt.

At least Douglas beat McCall in 89, to get the shot to fight Tyson. The same McCall that would knockout Lewis just 5 years later. Wlad's losses in his prime/35 bouts + under his belt. Were alot more shameful than Tyson losing to Douglas and the legendary Holyfield.

How could Tyson be in his prime from 1985-96 when he debuted in 1985, was arrested in 1991 and spent 3 years in prison between 92-95? His prime was around 87-90 and would have continued if he hadn't lost his motivation to train. I've said in other threads that it was 90-92 but I never checked the actual dates before and I knew his prime was only 2-3 years max and at a very young age.

By 2002, Tyson was over 10 years past his prime and had been out of boxing for 4 years during that time. He was a shell of the fighter he was but still managed to go 8 rounds with a Lewis much closer to his own prime.

No he wasn't at all; Douglas was chucking feather dusters at Tyson but gave 24 y/o Mike one of the worst, most brutal beatings I have seen to this day. Tyson was in truth finished after that fight. Klitschko has had his three losses but always came back stronger, unlike Tyson. I guess that's why boxrec rate him much higher :yep

If you call going life and death with Sam Peter in 05 getting better? It was Buster Douglas' night to shine, he was in great condition and left it all out there that night. Tyson on the other hand was at a crossroads in his career, just a year or so removed from having a whole new team in his corner. Tyson himself said, he was treated like a king in japan. Like he said in his book "I was popping japanese ***** like grapes", and was having orgies with the Toyko women to the early hours of the morning instead of training for the fight.

Sanders is no different than Douglas. He had one career defining fight, then went back to his old self afterward. 50 years from now, people will remember Douglas. They wont remember Sanders.
