Well for starters, Mike was a front runner who never came from behind, or got up to win, like Jack did against Brennan, Sharkey and Firpo. Nor can I see Tyson trudging on against Tunney like Dempsey did twice. Gene dominated Jack through 16 rounds before Dempsey finally broke through with the Long Count Knockdown. Would Mike have ever gotten anywhere near that point with Tunney before giving in? Jack drew with John Lester Johnson after fighting the final eight rounds with three cracked ribs. He got up from nine first round knockdowns to draw with Sudenberg. (This is part of why I don't buy the first match with Fireman Flynn as on the level. It's wildly inconsistent with the career patterns of both men. Jack was otherwise never stopped, didn't quit against Sudenberg or JLJohnson, and the Fireman had never halted an opponent in a single round in 102 previous career bouts. According to my Ring Record Book, this was the only first round win the Fireman had, although boxWRECK credits him with a couple later ones over opponents who otherwise have no record.)
Tunney at 5 heavyweight is mental. I don't get what he's basing that on. What's the rest of his list?
Did Atlas say who his #11-#18 were? #19 for Tyson is a bit cold, IMO; Tyson was formidable when he had his defense working.
No he didn't. But I found a link to The Ultimate Book of Boxing Lists by Bert Sugar and Atlas. Atlas' bottom 10 looks like this: 6. Dempsey 7. Langford 8. Sullivan 9. Holmes 10. Liston Still looking for 11-18.
I wonder if Teddy has been informed, on how much of an ass hes making of himself? His rants on Mike Tyson was interesting back then . But that got old like 10 years ago,, If anything he should probably kiss Tysons ass or thank him.. IF it wasnt for training Mike and being under Cus,,, He probably wouldnt have half the gigs hes got. Instead hed just be some grouchy part time trainer in an upstate NY... He reminds me of a grouchy bitter old man, but he needs at least another 20,25 years to be given a pass. I have Tyson at #7
Well shame on Teddy Atlas too...he's become a bitter, nasty old **** that seems to let his personal grudges to cloud any objectivity that that he may have. Don't expect ESPN to be objective either...they're all dedicated nut hugging fan-boy worshippers of Ali.
Until someone posts Atlas's full top 18, there's only this much to comment on with Tyson's placing. .... 1. Louis 2. Ali 3. Johnson 4. Marciano 5. Tunney 6. Dempsey 7. Langford 8. Sullivan 9. Holmes 10. Liston 19. Tyson OK, Tunney has already been mentioned as a contentious choice. And obviously Dempsey is ESB's favourite whipping dog, so many here will be hating on that too. Johnson is much maligned around here too. So, I suppose that's three that you all hate to see above the much-loved Tyson. It would be more interesting to see the rest of the list though. Notably, Holyfield, Lewis, Frazier and Foreman don't make the top 10 either. And Jeffries is a notable absentee for the admirers of ye olde times. I would have thought the lack of Lennox Lewis in the top 10 would be more disturbing to the ruling clique on this board.
