Indeed & it is, of course, a subjective topic to which people will have different opinions. Trying to rate fighters of different era's accurately is nigh on impossible due to the sheer number of variables. I must admit for a while I was a Klitschko detractor but there is no one else I'd like to see hoover up all the belts more than him & I believe he can do it given the opportunity.
Zakman for example rates Holyfield above Lewis because of those KO losses when Lewis was in his prime. At some point it becomes your opinion based on how highly you rate the length of their reign, quality of opposition, how decisively they won or lost & various other things.
Maybe, but on any given night no1. Ali, and no.2 ,Foreman would find themselves being counted out while staring at the floodlights.:yep
So here we have a very simple yardstick for measuring the greatness of Mike Tyson. He fought two hard fights, one pre-prison and one post-prison -- both of which he lost (subsequently, he ate his way to a third loss and fouled himself into a no-decision). The rest of his victories, pre-prison and post-prison, were over fighters who couldn't make the "C" list during Ali's tenure. So where does that put him on the list of all-time greats? It doesn't. He doesn't belong. He's not even in the top 20! If you think of the very few good heavyweight fighters who have plied their trade in the late 1980s and 1990s, it is a short list: Evander Holyfield, George Foreman (oh, yes, the Big George who fought Holyfield would have rocked Iron Mike just as he did Smokin' Joe), Riddick Bowe, and maybe Lennox Lewis and Michael Moorer. Tyson only fought one of them, and lost. The others he avoided. I do not, as some of you guys here do , lament the fact that Mike Tyson never lived up to his potential. In fact, I believe he did live up to it, fully, completely. His potential just wasn't all that great and that's what he became -- not all that great.:thumbsup
Damm u seem to be a bigger tyson hater , than i am a tyson fan atsch atsch You do realise lennox lewis beat a past it over the hill tyson . Infact most of the time the people who put down tyson are lewis fans that only remember him post prison
Oh I knew it wouldn't be long until someone used the "h" word. We're having a sensible discussion here so why is it that anyone who doesn't agree with you is labelled with the "h" word? It's not my fault if you are unable to converse on an intellectual level. May I suggest you re-read the whole thread & then come back to me? Thanks.
R u doing a don king ? Where don used tyson for his $$$$$ You seem to be using this tyson thread to get your post count up. But then again you live in watford
Not at all, it's a forum for discussion no? If you have some sensible rationale that you can put forward in order to strengthen Tyson's case for being higher up the all time rankings please do. Just don't chime in with the now tired cry of "h**er" because it's over use has now rendered the word meaningless to me. On a different point, I take it you know Watford then?
I have family in Harrow & Stanmore, small world. Anyway back on topic, it would appear your hero is in dire need of defence.
longevity must be factored into greatness, and a weak mindset is a weakness like any other. Tyson had potential but is not the best. Ali went through tougher times than Tyson, as did many other great HWs.
That's about right. Tyson is overrated by some, but not as much as Lennox Lewis is. You don't see too many people putting Tyson in the top five!! atsch :-(
