Congrats to Tyson on his new promoting venture and it seems like he is finally enjoying life. Question is what is going to happen on FNF, are they going to keep Tyson away as much as they can from Teddy? As much as I want Tyson to stay out of trouble I wouldn't mind if puts Atlas in his place. Sometimes I just don't understand what comes out of his mouth, he hurts the sport more often than he realizes.
Whats FNF..for us brits? Some US TV station? As for Tyson vs Atlas..KO1 Tyson has calmed down and matured a lot in the last couple of years and if he can shake the hand of King Don..then I'm sure he'll be ok with Atlas...even if its just to be a good boy and not rock the boat.
Atlas is an errand boy in the sport compared to Tyson or any promotion company that can create profitable events. If ESPN wants Teddy to go get Mike a sandwich, then Teddy will go get Mike a sandwich. "Vegan, please!"
Tyson would probably try to reunite but teddy is a stubborn SOB. Regardless of where tyson is at in his life the two spent a couple of years every single day in the gym together when they were both young. Teddy used to drive tyson from the catskills to NYC to get amateur fights every saturday.
let me tell yall something.teddy and tyson were never close.teddy worked with tyson and thats it.tyson never liked teddy and he knew it.teddy would of licked tyson's balls if cus told him to. teddy is garbage as a trainer and has ruined every fighter he's fu**ed with.
I laugh when people say "Atlas willed Moorer to the heavyweight title". Moorer didn't step up the intensity at all in the rounds following Atlas's pleading. Moorer showed more heart and passion in fights with different trainers (Manny Steward, Freddie Roach) Under Atlas's tutelage, Shannon Briggs fell apart mentally against Darroll Wilson. With another trainer, Briggs fought his heart out against Lennox Lewis. I'm trying to think of an example when a fighter did better with Atlas in his corner. Interesting that another former Tyson trainer, Aaron "put the condom with tap water on Tyson's eye" Snowell, had more success as a pro trainer than Atlas.
Teddy was always jealous of Cus and Mike's relationship. Teddy had no talent and Mike did so Cus put much of his affection on Mike. Teddy couldn't box, and he is even a worst trainer. Fuk Atlas. The only reason he is on ESPN is because of his past relationship with Cus & Mike.
Cus did not pick Atlas to trained Tyson.........................that made Atlas very angry........................ Atlas almost always picks the wrong fighter to win a fight, esp. if it's Klitschko, but I do agree with Atlas on Provodnikov beating Algieri..............
Jesus Christ, why all this hate for Teddy???! Teddy Atlas is a guy who has a rough and maybe unpleasant exterior, he doesn't smile much, isn't maybe the most pleasant, but the guy's got a heart of gold. Don't judge the guy harshly based on the fact that in person to person contact he may not be the most pleasant person. He does a lot of charity work helping sick people who can't afford medical treatment, and generally, when you get past the rough exterior, he's a really really good guy who's always looking to help people.
He was Tyson's trainer. Cus picked Atlas to train Tyson and they were doing fine until Tyson messed with Atlas' niece and Atlas went ballistic. Rooney only stepped in after Atlas was fired. What made Atlas angry was that he felt Cus was letting Tyson get away with too much, like skipping his chores or overlooking indiscretions that other fighters were punished for. Atlas - rightly - thought that Tyson was being pampered and could do whatever he pleased, as long as he showed up in the gym. It was a perfectly understandable reaction because Atlas could see the unfairness at play.
It doesn't reflect nicely when a person carries a grudge over an issue which occurred 32 years ago. Needs to move on. People make concessions for special highly talented world class individuals at their peak the world over. Tyson had become a huge thing and it wasn't surprising to see people making exceptions for him.
I agree that Atlas carried the grudge on for way too long. Way too long. But it probably goes a little deeper than we realise, because Rooney became a celebrated trainer with Tyson, and I don't think Rooney was a particularly good trainer, just a good fit for Tyson. Atlas probably looked at the recognition the average Rooney was getting and though 'that could have been me.' I respect Atlas for standing up for the other fighters in Cus' charge at the time. Yeah Tyson was the special one but I don't think it entitled him to special privileges. He was just an overgrown kid with lots of talent at the time, not the superstar he later became. Anyway, on the face of it they have buried the hatchett now. They will never be close again but at least there seems to be some closure on the issue.
Regarding Teddy carrying a grudge, you have to understand, Tyson felt up Teddy's niece, who was very young, I don't remember exactly how old, but I think like 12 or something like this, and he was doing it to get back at Teddy, I can't remember over what, but I think it was over Teddy putting him out of the gym for his misbehavior that someone mentioned earlier. So think about that, that's pretty nasty stuff, to get ***ual with a girl that young just to get back at a guy who's been training you and been there for you for so long. You can see Teddy tell part of the story in this interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXpNxe4KfFs You gotta agree, if someone did that to a member of your family, especially one that young, you'd carry a grudge for a long time, too. And Mike never came to him to apologize or anything. Not when Teddy came with a gun to confront him, not at any point later until recently and when he did Teddy accepted his apology. This was before Tyson became champion and, yes, concessions are made for VIPs, sure, but things like getting a table at a restaurant or a seat at an event is one thing, its quite another what Tyson was doing. He was putting his hands on girls in school, he'd show up at the cafeteria before lunch time and demand to be fed and then when the old ladies working there would tell him to go to class he'd throw milk cartons around, one time he got physical with a teacher, stuff like this, it wasn't light stuff, it wasn't just skipping chores and stuff like that, and Cus was making deals with the assistant principle to not have him punished and Teddy felt he needed to be punished for that kinda behavior. Not only that, but the money. The mountains and mountains of money. Teddy trained Mike since he was 12 and helped him through a lot of things. For ex. look at the sequence here that runs from 44:45... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWtr9hvqq9c .... Teddy took Mike to fights and worked with him through moments like that, and not just to the Junior Olympics, but the so called "smoakers" in dumpy backwater, dangerous places for years and years and got paid squat. Think about how you'd feel if you'd worked with a guy for so long and for free only for him to betray you and then you get NOTHING when he starts making unimaginable amounts of money, even though you are legitimately entitled to a percentage. And in his autobiography Teddy says that Cus offered him a percentage of Mike's future earnings right after that incident between Teddy and Mike happened, and this was after Cus had already told him he was not welcome any more, so its quite possible that this was a way of buying Teddy's silence in case the police came to investigate (because Teddy fired off a gun when he confronted Mike) and Teddy told him to go fly a kite. Teddy is a great guy, a lot of people just see the exterior which can sometimes be abrasive, but that's just his manner, this guy has helped so many people through his charity work and is a real good guy, I mean really an exceptional guy if you get to know about him. Here's a link to him on NPR where, among other things, he discusses what was happening with Tyson: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5492379
